Not Convinced

KRYS LET HER LONG BLACK HAIR fall to her shoulders as she sat on the stool near the fire pit. The fire felt warm on her body, but she still felt a small stream of cold air that tickled her. The cold air stole any comfort she tried to get from the fire. She shivered, and her mother must have noticed because her mother handed her a quilt. She wrapped it around her shoulders and smiled. The stream of cold air no longer bothered her.

“Is this the quilt you made when I was born?” Krys asked as her mother began to brush her hair.

“Yes, dear.”

“Did you love father?” she asked as she turned to see her mother’s face.

“It’s complicated,” her mother replied. She studied her mother’s face for a moment and then turned back as her mother continued to brush her hair.

“Did he love you?” she asked.

“It was a long time ago,” her mother said with a sigh.

“How do you know?” she asked as she turned once again to see her mother’s face.

“How do you know what?” Milena continued to brush her hair.

She turned back to face the fire and thought on it for a moment. Why would her mother not answer her questions about her father? Maybe her mother did not know if her father loved her. Was it hard to tell? Was it all a guess? “How do I know if Dariel loves me?” She finally asked.

“You will know,” her mother replied.

“But how?”

“Well, let’s see,” Milena began, “Does he look at you?”

“Yeah, but Kluber looks at me,” she replied with disdain. “I know he doesn’t like me. He’s a pig.”

“It’s a different kind of look. Does he look at you like there is no one else around? Like, you are the only one in the world?”

“He’s always staring at me when we talk,” she said as she thought of Dariel, “Sometimes we just stare at each other. It’s weird. Like, we just sit there and look. We don’t talk. I mean, we talk, but sometimes we just look at each other. I want him to kiss me, but he doesn’t. Can he still love me and not kiss me?”

She faced her mother once again and saw the smile on her mother’s face. She knew she talked a lot. Her mother had told her many times. Even she was amazed that she had sat long enough for her mother to brush her hair. It was rare for her to stay still for so long. She always had to do something. She always had to say something. This need to talk or do something usually got her into trouble. “If he loves you,” her mother said, “then he’ll kiss you.”

“So why hasn’t he kissed me?” she asked and turned back to the fire.

“There are a few reasons he may not have,” Milena replied.

“Like what?”

“Like you never stop talking long enough for him to try,” her mother sighed.

“Momma!”

“Just wait for it. When the time is right, he’ll kiss you.”

“And that means he loves me,” she said.
