Chapter One – Regina

Living out in the country provided some advantages. Fresher air, for one. Bright stars at night, peace and quiet, and being able to walk around at three in the morning without fear of attack.

It also provided some distinct disadvantages. Pretty much anything important had to be purchased online, and the number of things to do was… severely limited, to say the least. The five attractions in the small town of Geevor had now turned to six, thanks to Regina Arnetto’s youngest sister opening their father’s ranch for business, turning it from an eyesore to a place people visited on the weekends.

Regina still didn’t know what to think about the ranch, since if the decision had resided with her, there would be no ranch. She'd have dismantled it, stone by stone. Right now, it hummed with life. Overseas and state volunteers occupied the cabins outside the homestead. Some children rode the horses around the paddock, led by adults, others screamed and chased each other in the driftwood play area. Acres of land shimmered with growing crops, with livestock such as cows, goats, chickens, and sheep, with plans to buy pigs eventually.

The ranch seemed like a success, but Regina remembered its shadowy origins. She remembered the heavy footsteps of her father pounding the wooden floorboards in the evening, and the acrid smell of alcohol on his breath. She saw the dirty, dilapidated ranch, the animals dying of malnutrition, the ranch hands constantly changing, unable to deal with her father’s particular brand of furious management.

She still bore scars from some of his attacks. But at least now that wretched man was cremated, his ashes scattered, no longer a threat. She’d never feel his heavy hand across her skin again, or the cut of a broken bottle lacerating flesh, or cigarette stubs burning a trail along her arms. All for the sake of protecting her sisters.

And with his death, the broken remnants of the three sisters who grew up in this broken place had healed.

Mostly.

Sometimes, Regina still woke up sweating. Sometimes she thought she was back there, in the basement, eyes squeezed shut, hoping her father’s short, shallow breaths would turn into languid puffs of sleep.

Her foot tapped in an impatient rhythm on the ground, and she flicked a thin smile at Uncle Boyd when he approached, rubbing the bald patch on his head, dressed in denim dungarees, and wearing work boots caked in mud. “Just had to inform you, Regina,” he said, not meeting her eyes. “She didn’t make it.” It irritated her, seeing the weakness in the man. It made her want to bully him, to scorn such attitude, and she hated herself every time she gave into the impulse, because it made her no better than her father. No better than him at all.

“The cow?” she said, keeping her tone as level as possible. Her eyes flicked briefly to the barn where they’d been keeping the injured animal since finding it mutilated in predawn hours.
