As we emerged from the interdimensional fire and recorporealized on the other side—not just in another place and time, but in another dimension entirely—I clung to Atum, panting, my eyelids squeezed shut and my cheek squished into the hollow of his shoulder. And I could tell, easily, that he hadn’t been kidding about the crossing destroying our clothing. His trousers were long gone, as was every other stitch of clothing I had been wearing before the trip across dimensions.

Trust me. I could tell. Holy fucking hell, this man would be my destruction.

I understood now why Atum had removed his beloved boots and turned them into At, along with everyone and everything else he wanted to save. The otherworldly material seemed to be the only thing that could survive the trip.

Besides us.

Except, I didn’t think we had emerged unscathed. Atum’s skin felt different under my splayed fingers. The raised bumps and ridges of his scars were gone, leaving only smooth, soft skin stretched over hard muscle. My fingers trailed over his chest and down his sides, savoring the feel of him bared to me. Pressed against me.

Atum sucked in a sharp breath, his entire body tensing.

I opened my eyes and tilted my head back so I could see the rapturous expression on his face. Stars gleamed in a clear night sky beyond him. Despite apparently being the middle of the night here, the temperature was perfectly comfortable.

Atum lightly grazed his large hands down my bare back, and I gasped in pleasure, understanding his reaction. My nerve endings felt electrified, every point of contact between us far more sensitive than usual, and that benign touch sent aftershocks of ecstasy jolting through my body, making my spine arch and my legs tremble.

Atum wrapped his arms around me, pressing our bodies more firmly together, and for an indeterminate time, the feel of him overwhelmed my brain, blocking out all other sensory input and rendering me momentarily mute.

Slowly, my awareness of where I was returned, and I regained my ability to think coherently, and eventually, even to speak. “What—” My voice was barely audible, so I cleared my throat and tried again. “What was that?”

Atum chuckled, and goosebumps rose all over my skin. “That was just a taste of the bliss we could share if our souls were bound together.”

I scoffed and tilted my head back so I could see his face. “Just a taste?” I laughed, disbelieving. “There’s more?”

Atum pressed his lips to my forehead and inhaled, breathing me in. “Matter from the physical realm cannot cross dimensions, so you are reduced to your spiritual essence during the journey. For a brief moment, our exposed souls were able to interact without any barriers. And the resonance between us ensured the meeting was charged.”

“Charged?” I barked a laugh. “That’s one word for it,” I said, thinking climactic was a little more appropriate.

The sails snapped overhead, and I looked up as they filled with a strong wind, propelling us toward the moonlit island.

Considering what else Atum
