Once his claws released me, I stumbled onto the landing platform at the bottom of the floating prison, falling on my ass. Glancing up, I saw the monster leave me, flying to the top of the building.

“So much for being gentle,” I mumbled to myself after he pretty much threw me there.

Standing, I patted my butt clean and faced the massive door. A set of metal locks glared at me. I glared back. How the hell was I going to get in there?

“Hey, you!” I yelled at the talking firebird who was no longer in sight. “Am I supposed to just stay here?” My only answer was a loud squeak, just as the locks behind me began to clang open, gears turning into place. “I’m talking to you, you… you big, stupid—”

“Warden,” a deep voice scolded, and I turned around to find a tall brawny man pulling the heavy door open.

The metal creaked when he stepped outside, and I recognized his race instantly. I had almost married one.

“And who are you, Woodland Warrior?”

His eyes slightly widened at my perception, but it soon turned into disapproval. “You know what I am, inmate?”

“I’ve come across your kind once or twice.”

“My name is Fergus,” he added with a nod, and stopped before me, almost dwarfing me. “I’m Chief of Security and the warden’s second. You will address him with respect or deal with me. Understood?”

He gripped my arm with the question, I supposed to drag me inside, but I wrenched it from his large hands. “First of all, I can walk on my own, thank you very much. And second, what is it with the ‘understood?’ crap. Are all males here misogynistic idiots?!”

I had no idea why I was so pissed off, but that stupid bird had riled me up to no end.

My blood was boiling.

Fergus’ eyebrows rose while a few men laughed from the other side of the door—more guards ready to wrangle the dangerous new prisoner, probably. He huffed, but a certain amusement flitted along his face.

“Let’s just get this over with,” I retorted, offering my wrists to him so he could bind me.

He shook his head. “There are no shackles in this prison.”

“What?” Surprise made its way through me. “Don’t you deal with the most dangerous criminals in all realms?”

“We used to have them,” he conceded. “But they haven’t been used since the Dark Phoenix arrived. People don’t ‘step out of line’ with him here, so there is no longer a need for them.”

Huh… interesting.

Curiosity entered his expression, and he regarded me for a few seconds. Bad move. His pupils soon dilated, green eyes filling with desire and adoration while my nature easily captured him. Unable to help himself, Fergus’ intense gaze travelled the length of my body, appreciating every curve as my alluring perfume drifted into his nose and pores, intoxicating him, and leaving him at my mercy.

“Hey! Wake up, Woodland Warrior!” I snapped my fingers in his face, pulling him out of the trance before he was gone for good.
