I accepted the tumbler of scotch and sipped it slowly as Alastair filled Lucifer in on the progress of the rising realm. It became obvious the demon was quite the trickster and took great joy in manipulating and fooling an unsuspecting and ignorant populace. He soon had me laughing as he spun fantastic tales as medieval as anything Tolkien could have written.

The horned demon was indeed likable, as Lucifer pointed out, and one heck of a storyteller. I could tell we would work well together and even though I never had close friends as a mortal, I was already feeling a familiar yet unexpected camaraderie with Alastair.

In the middle of a particularly ridiculous tale of a sexual nature, which involved a group of sisters and my new cohort disguising himself as a goat, I wiped a tear of laughter from my eye and caught Lucifer staring at me. The fire blazing in his amber orbs expressed his emotion perfectly. The Devil was happy. Something about the very thought gave me a deep sense of contentment and I winked at him and wiggled my empty glass. Taking it, along with Alastair’s, Lucifer walked to the wet bar and began to pour our refills.

“Why, thanks! I don’t mind if I do!” My head whipped to the doorway toward the unfamiliar voice to see a demon leaning against the frame. He had greasy, slicked-back hair and his ill-fitting suit didn’t convey the message he thought it did. I instantly disliked the slimy grin that was as dishonest as the vibes rolling off him.

“Come on, boss, don’t be like that. I came to give you some major kudos and hit ya up with my proposition.”

His words did nothing to calm Luc, and looking at Alastair, I could see him sizing up the newcomer—and finding him lacking. This idiot was going to end up being a midnight snack if he didn’t watch himself; he had just walked into a wolf den with both pack alphas present.

“And what would make you think I need any kind of ‘kudos’ from you?” Lucifer sneered, using air quotes to express his sarcasm. In mere seconds I saw the easy-going devil and his right-hand man morph from a couple of dudes having a drink and laughing into two predators ready to strike.

“The number you did on the dude in cell one, man! I know that was your work, I’d recognize it anywhere. Freak ain’t recoverin’, either. I went in there, ya know, just to fuck with him a bit and after tryin’ to wrap my head around the sick shit you did to him, I realized he was cryin’ like a little bitch and begging to be left alone. I ain’t ever seen that before with him. Guess you finally got sick of his mouth and decided to step in
