Grigori

Excitement was building inside of him as he pressed the handcannon to Tatiana’s back. She was stiff and angry now, but eventually, she would understand he’d done what he had to do to save her—just as he had before. For now, he could hear the sounds of violence had stopped, and raised male voices spoke back and forth, though their words were unintelligible. Not that he needed to understand what they were saying to know what was happening.

Malachi was officially challenging Jeffos.

Soon, they would both be dead, and he would finally have everything he’d worked for, everything he deserved.

“Where are we going?” Tatiana sounded as if she was talking through clenched teeth.

He wished he could see her expression, but he had to stand slightly behind her to make sure the handcannon remained hidden. So far, they hadn’t encountered anyone else as he moved them down to the ground floor, but that didn’t mean they wouldn’t, and Grigori didn’t want to chance someone coming to her aid.

“We’re going to watch the duel.”

“I was already watching.” She turned her head to look at him over her shoulder, her body softening slightly, lower lip trembling. “Grigori, what is going on? Why are you doing this to me?”

“I am saving you. I know you cannot see it now, but you will.”

“How are you saving me?” Frustration filled her voice.

“Just keep moving.” He pushed her forward, not too roughly, to the doorway into the courtyard. The doors were already open. They would be able to watch the fight, and when it was over, he could shoot the victor and in the confusion, escape with Tatiana. There was a secret passage not far from the front door that led to the streets outside the house, and he was fairly certain he was the only one who knew about it.

She sucked in a breath as the courtyard came into view, just in time for them to watch the Warlord spring at Malachi.

Grigori didn’t have to push her forward any longer. Grabbing her arm, he pulled her back to keep her from barreling out of the door into the courtyard. She had no sense at all, no instinct for self-preservation. It was a miracle she hadn’t gotten herself killed before.

“Stay still,” he growled. “If you distract Malachi, Jeffos will gut him.”

Not that Grigori cared, but she would. Tatiana froze, her body stiff as stone, staring into the courtyard with a clenched jaw. She did not even spare Grigori a glance or a word of thanks for saving her from herself.

The bitterness that welled up inside him was so sharp, he could taste it on his tongue.
