They all freeze except for Natalie and me. My instincts tell me to scream and run for the door, but I find I cannot yell and can hardly move. Werewolf grabs me from my waist, and Ghost picks up Natalie, who is still crying, and they both drag us into the kitchen. Once there, Werewolf presses me up against the wall and grabs my face with one hand. His masked face is inches from mine. The smell of cigarettes, strong liquor and cheap silicone invade my nostrils, and the combination of all three scents is nauseating.

“If that is the cops, I swear, I’m gonna kill you both before they arrest us,” he growls beneath his mask.

His eyes are wild, studying my face, but there is something else there too. Worry. Werewolf is worried. All these cowards are. Ghost is pacing left and right, still holding Natalie, and Mummy is next to the sink with his head hanging low. They had not planned on me making a run for the door. Did someone notice us? Did someone hear our screams? I put a dent in their plan, and now they are the caged animals. Desperate, scared, and dangerous. So, in spite of the pain in half my body, I stay still. A wrong move on my part, and it is all over.

“Man! Oh, Man! What the fuck now, Gee?” asks Ghost.

G? Is that a real name or just the first letter of his name? Holding my daughter with little care and dangling her, Ghost paces back and forth. My baby’s sobs are barely audible underneath Ghost’s large hand pressing over her tiny mouth. My heart is racing. What will they do to us now? Will they just kill us and run out the back door? God, what have I done? Have I done nothing more but stoke the fire? The doorbell rings again.

Werewolf lowers his head, maybe thinking what his next move will or should be, and like a faulty coil, the solution to their problem springs into my head. I cannot help but think I have a lucky card in my game now. If I play this right, we can maybe get out of this. Werewolf looks back up at me, and even with the knot in the pit of my stomach, I still want to snicker at him. I think we both came up with the same solution. That’s right, asshole, you have no choice but to let me answer the door. The wildness and craziness in his eyes a few seconds ago have left him. He now has a determined, menacing stare. His eyes move to my head wound, and I can tell he regrets knocking me around. The right side of my face is all bloodied, probably swollen.

“All right, bitch. Here’s what’s gonna happen now. You clean yourself up and go answer the door. If it’s the cops, you better make them leave, or I swear that by the time they reach the kitchen, I would have stabbed that little shit of yours.
