At sea

The salty sea water splashed Kiana in the face as she stood at the bow of the Lady Hawk. Beside her stood Quinton and Sharon silently watching the awesome and dreadful battle play out in front of them. A huge battle was raging, both on the seas and on the land.

They never had caught up to the invading fleet as it sailed towards Balta, but the illusion they had created had served its purpose. The Baltan fleet was now sailing out to meet the enemy, which thanks to the arrival of Morthon’s war ships, was now sailing into the narrow strait from both the north and the south.

Quinton swore in frustration. “Morthon’s troop ships are going to be able to land right beside the city walls and there is nothing that can be done. The fleet must meet the northern war ships out in the open waters. They can’t afford to send any ships back to block the Morthon ships.”

Kiana knew it sounded bad, but as long as they landed outside of the city walls it wasn’t all that terrible, was it? “That isn’t good?”

Quinton nodded and pointed to Balta, black smoke and flames filled the sky above the city. Great catapults had been dragged into firing range of Balta and for the last hour had been pummeling the city with rocks and fiery chunks of trees. “Those catapults have greater range than any we’ve ever dealt with before. Morthon’s army is sitting in front of the catapults waiting and daring our knights to attack. If and when the knights do attack the army to try and destroy the catapults the Morton troop ships will land and the knights will be surrounded.”

“What happens if they don’t attack the catapults?” asked Kiana. Going out to attack the catapults seemed like a really bad option.

“If they don’t find a way to destroy the catapults, they will destroy the city walls and then the Morthon army will attack. They may just wait and keep bombarding the city while the two fleets fight at sea. If our fleet loses then two separate armies will enter Balta at once,” said Quinton.

Kiana frowned. That option sounded worse than attacking the catapults. “What can we do?”

“Right now? Nothing.” Quinton put his hand on his sword. “But we are the only ship close enough to attack Morthon’s ships. Hopefully, we can get to them before they land.”

“We are going to attack them? There has to be a dozen ships there!”

“Be thankful it is only a dozen. I am betting that a sizeable contingent of the Morthon fleet is sailing past Pailtar right now so they can block Venecia from aiding us.”

Kiana stared as another large fireball sailed over Balta’s city walls, crashing into a building. Her mother might still be in Balta, along with all her friends. If attacking a dozen ships with one helped them, then she was willing to do whatever it takes. “So how do we destroy a dozen warships?”

“We don’t,” said Sharon. “Quinton is being optimistic, there is almost zero chance that we get to those ships before they land.
