Chapter Six
If this was death, then she would happily die a hundred times over, Celeste thought as she felt herself cocooned in Simiel’s warm arms. There was no purpose to living if she could never feel this way again.
“I won’t leave you,” she said as she pressed her tired body into his. “How can I now?”
There was no reply.
“Michael said you would steal my soul and take me away with you. Is it true?” Again, no answer. “Simiel, is it true? Is that power within you?”
“Go to sleep, little mortal, your thoughts rob you of your strength.”
“The Eve of Samhain, that’s when you will come fully into your powers. When you will be able to leave the Night Wood and roam amongst the mortals. It’s then that you can steal me away, and bring me to live with you. You can save me,” she said, reaching for him. “Make me live.”
“It is not saving you,” he said, brushing his mouth against her hair, “but condemning you.”
“Even if it I want it, to come back to the Night Wood and live forever here with you?”
“Mortals can never truly understand what they ask for.”
“I do. I know what you are. I know what it will mean to die in your arms and have you take my soul.”
“If you did,” he whispered darkly, “you would never entertain the idea, nor ask me to fulfill your wish. Now,” he said, brushing his hand over her face, “you will sleep. The dawn approaches.”

He could not do it, to steal something so precious from her.Simiel settled over Celeste, watching her sleeping, sweeping the tip of his black wing through her hair. His flesh tingled, flickering with the contact, craving her like a drug, needing to feel her infusing his veins.
Over and over he stroked her, running his wing tip over her brow and down her nose. In a fleeting sweep, he brushed her mouth, watching her lips part beneath the black feathers. His feathers, which had once been white and pure, were now black. Sinful.
For all his hundreds of years, he yearned for this. To feel, to experience what it was to be human. He had felt sex and arousal, pleasure and pain. He had experienced jealousy and anger, but never this, never this soft feeling. Love, he knew it to be the emotion. But he didn’t expect it to hurt. To make his heart ache. The humans strove to love, they embraced it, yearned for it, clutched at it. It brought euphoria, but he didn’t realize that it also brought pain. He knew it now, for his heart was aching. A relentless ache deep in his chest. He wanted to be a mortal. He always had, but now, that desire changed. He
