Chapter Thirteen

WINDY INSERTED HIMSELF between the enraged waitress and Hollie, a crackling blue shield appearing around his body. It absorbed the demoness’s blow, but the action only seemed to make her madder. She let out a growl and pushed the bot out of her way, then rushed at Hollie once again.

Fear drenched Hollie, and she skittered backwards, ignoring the bodies she bumped into. Any moment now, I’m either going to get my block knocked off, or Samael is going to figure out that I’m the one causing this ruckus. She had to find a way out of the situation and quickly.

“Windy, we’ve got to get out of here now!” she yelled, then turned to flee and ran right into a wall of hard muscle. Looking up, Hollie realized she was pressed against the chest of one irate vampire.

“A bar brawl? Really?” he said, then grabbed her, swiveling quickly to move her out of the way of the attacking demoness. The waitress was not to be denied her prey, however, and she quickly launched herself onto Maz’s back.

The vampire stiffened, then let out a growl. He grabbed the woman’s arm and flipped her over so that she was suddenly standing on the other side of him. She blinked in confusion and whirled around to face the vampire again, her fist flying toward his face, but Maz was too quick for her.

“Stop attempting to strike me, or I’ll be forced to restrain you,” he warned. The demoness refused to listen, so Maz snatched the belt off a passing demon and yanked her hands behind her back, winding the belt around her wrists. “There,” he said, giving her a shove away from him. Focusing his attention on Hollie once again, he gave her a telling look. “Let’s get out of here before I have to take down everyone in this bar.”

Windy’s small hand grabbed hers, and they made a beeline for the exit. The scene behind her had descended into chaos, and as they fled, Hollie could hear the sounds of blows landing and glass breaking. Well, I suppose it could have gone worse, she thought, feeling an inch away from hysteria.

Once outside the door, Hollie was careful to avoid the puke puddle. She sidled down the building’s face, then paused in front of the storefront next door that was dark and silent. Maz was at her side a second later, his hand latching on to her arm. “What in the worlds did you think you were doing?” he asked, his expression incredulous. “And how did you make it out of the keep? You were locked in my quarters.”

Hollie shrugged, pretending it had been as easy as blinking. “I didn’t feel like hanging around that old place all night. I figured it might be fun to get out and meet people.”

“You were looking for a ride out of Pluto,” he contradicted her. “Didn’t you stop to think that the moment you had a demon take you off-world, you’d be breaking your unbreakable vow?”

“Is
