Chapter Eleven
I IMMEDIATELY JUMP OFF of the bed. Holy shit, the thought of my Mother hearing us, or walking in on us, makes me nervous.
"Why would we have company at this hour? It's got to be one in the morning!" Elijah moans.
On speedy legs, we rush to dress in the darkness. I pull everything out of the draws and throw it all onto the floor, desperately trying to find something to wear. Once I'm in my pink pyjama set, and Elijah is practically modelling a pair of grey pyjama bottoms - no top - I open the door to my Mother. She's standing in the same, silk white dressing gown. Her hair is bed hair, messy and frizzy; her ice blue eyes are struggling to stay open. I stop for a moment to appreciate her beauty - even tired she looks like an angel.
"Anile, are you okay?" She asks serious.
"Yes, sorry Mum, I'm just tired. Who is it?"
"It's Elijah's Grandmother."
I turn to look at Elijah, he's standing right behind me. "I didn't know you had a Grandmother?" I smile fondly.
He rolls his eyes. "It's my Mother's step Mother. She's a lovely, caring woman." He pauses for a moment. "Do you want to meet her?"
My nerves immediately pay me a visit. Will she really be nice or is that just Elijah's perspective of her?
I swallow hard. "I'd love to."
He takes my hand. "Well, let's go then." He kisses the top of my hand and I flush because my Mother is watching us intently.
"I'm going to go back to bed if that's okay, Elijah?" My Mother asks.
"Of course, Fraya, you must be exhausted."
"I am," she says sweetly, "please tell your Grandmother it was a pleasure to meet her and I'll see her in the morning."
"I will." He says.
"Night Mum." I hug her with my free arm.
"Night, Anile."
Elijah pulls me down the hallway and to the top of the stairs, I'm so damn nervous that I fear I'll fall down them. He rushes down every step, he's excited - bless him. We reach the living area, and I'm astonished to see a gorgeous old woman of around, maybe sixty, standing in front of the lit fireplace. She has lustrous short red, curly hair - and her face, wow! She has the face of an angel; small and round with big, pretty eyes. She's stunning, and dressed in a long, brown fur coat. Her pout is brown also - I think she fancies the colour brown. I mentally giggle. Elijah releases my hand and rushes over to her.
"Gran, how nice to see you." He says fondly.
"Oh my boy," she cradles him in her arms, "my boy. Oh I've missed you." She pulls him at arms length and casts her eyes over him. "What a dashing young man you are." She smiles proud.
"Gran, stop." He's embarrassed.
I giggle in the archway into the living area. She stares over at me, and for a moment, I feel like I'm on trial.
"And who is this pretty little thing?"
Elijah walks towards me, one arm held out to seize me around my shoulders.
