Chapter Six

Hidden by many trees and bushes, the new queen of the wood sprites, Aria the Golden, watched the handsome knight from the Kingdom of Caul sleep. She intended to apologize for the younger fairies teasing him every night and disturbing his rest. He had clearly come to the Bordertree Forest to be alone, and yet they had sought him repeatedly and disrupted his slumber. A shapeshifter fairy had even taken Aria’s form to taunt the poor man!

She might not have been queen of the wood sprites for very long, but she could keep these pesky pixies in line.

This morning she had scolded the fairies for bewitching the knight and told them how disappointed she was with their actions. It was one thing to cavort with people who offered themselves for pleasure, but it was another to chase a man who was obviously trying to get away. Invading his dreams was like invading his privacy. Everyone had to give consent, and that meant being awake or stating one’s desires beforehand.

Now it was her duty to tell him how sorry she was that her ladies in waiting had misbehaved, but the knight was so handsome as he slept that she couldn’t bring herself to wake him.

She could visit him during the day, but she didn’t like to expose herself to the sunlight. Moonlight was much safer for a full fairy. The sun could melt her delicate wings, and without her wings she would no longer be queen of the fairies. Granted, all fairies could pull their wings into their spines, shrinking to just a beautiful tattoo, but that would not save them from the heat of the sun. It just prolonged it.

She did not want to become a nymph again. Though she also ruled over the wood nymphs and loved them as much as the sprites, she had worked very long and hard earn her wings. Only six months ago had she taken the mantle of queen upon herself, when Tatiana retired, and it seemed like nothing had gone as planned.

The woven blankets moved up and down softly as the knight slept. He was so tempting and very delightful to look upon. The other night he had broken the spell of her lyre long enough to wake and find her, which had surprised her. He had crossed completely into the fairy lands, which was very rare for a normal being.

But it had also given her hope. Even better, the way he had politely listened without disturbing her had told her that he was not a barbaric person who would seek to take what he wanted by force.

He wasn’t a threat to her, but he was a temptation.

And he was a curiosity.

She tiptoed closer to the knight and listened to his breathing. The sound was quiet and pleasing to her ears. She moved closer still and knelt in the thick grasses near his head. His big stallion eyed her through the dark, huffed, and decided she was nothing to worry about. She was close enough to study the man.
