I skidded to a stop at the edge of the border. “You sound like my old P.E. teacher. I literally just ran miles. Do you see how good my ass is? I don’t want to hear another word about my getting in shape.”

Willow went from scared, to confused, to irritated.

There we go, vampy. Get your shit together.

I examined the circle, ignoring the wet sound of blood splashing on the grass. “Wish I was a witch. What is it?”

“Blood circle, I think,” she replied, spitting. “It’ll kill me if you can’t break it.”

If it were a salt barrier, I might have been able to. Depending on the type of circle and the strength of the witch, sometimes it’s as easy as disturbing the shape with a kick of your thrifted boot-clad foot.

But this one only showed a fancy glow. Her rune skills were advanced enough that she’d drawn this circle with pure magic.

Damn full-bloods getting all the cool tricks.

“Just so you know, the undead are coming,” I said. I pulled a stick of gum from my pocket and tossed it at the circle. It sizzled and turned to smoke, the impact space in the air glowing a hazy red.

That’s no good.

Willow retched and vomited another mouthful of blood. Looked like the circle was liquifying her insides. I had to think fast.

Willow gasped and said, “Just get out of here while you can, Cut. No use getting yourself killed, too.”

“Oh, shut up, moron,” I shot back. “You’re interrupting my thinking.”

“I never realized you could think —”

“Watch your tone, vampy bitch.”

She cried out and held her palms to her eyes. Streams of blood poured down her face.

The circle grew just a tad brighter, letting me see the ground a little more clearly.

Wait a second…

The necromancer hadn’t drawn this with pure magic, after all. She’d drawn it with paint. Green paint, to blend into the grass.

I could see it clearly, now that the glowing rune circle was brightening. She must have lured Willow into this spot, which she’d obviously prepared ahead of time, and banked on the fact that Willow wouldn’t be able to see the green paint because of the light sensitivity supplements.

Sneaky, sneaky.

All that meant was that I could disturb the circle without getting demolished by power.

“Behind you!” Willow choked out.

I dove to the side just as an undead lunged.

Woah. I really need to pay more attention to my surroundings. I’d known they’d be coming for me, after all.

Head in the game, Aster.

But the undead couldn’t stop itself in time. It crashed into the blood barrier. It sizzled, shrieked for one horrible second, and then turned to smoke.

In the light of the magic circle, I counted them quickly. Nine. Only nine more.

They came at me in a pack. There wasn’t any convenient one-on-one battling. It was just me against nine crazed zombies.

I dodged and struck out as much as possible. I managed to push one more into the magical barrier, which grew brighter with every passing second.

It’s a blood barrier. And it’s getting stronger the more Willow bleeds out into it.
