Neither of them said a word until they were safely concealed in the stairwell - and about four storeys up.

“Oh my gosh, dude!” Jake said, stopping and leaning against the wall. He was breathless, but not from the steps. “That was... I don’t even know what!”

“Yeah, tell me about it!” Phillip said, grabbing the railing as he sat down on the landing.

“So who was that guy?”

“He was an orderly for a while at the hospital. But my dad and he really hit it off. He doesn’t have any family, so dad would invite him over for dinner like once a week. His name’s Scott.”

“That was nice of him. But wait a minute,” Jake continued, “did you know your dad was going to be here today?”

“Uh, definitely not! I have no idea why he would be here.”

“Well, unless he’s here to oversee building security, hopefully we won’t run into him.”

“It’s a big place. I’m sure we’ll be fine.”
