Shadow Alchemy 101

S queaks made a little nest in front of the fireplace, falling fast asleep, while Jonas and I began my first Shadow Alchemy lesson. I suspected that Jonas wasn’t supposed to teach me his craft, given that he was a pupil himself, but if I’d learned anything so far, it was that having a piece of my soul gave my vessels unique gifts and strong powers.

Plus, I’d never heard of Shadow Alchemy and I was eager to learn more about it and to see what Jonas was capable of, especially if he was willing to teach it to me.

“Every incantation begins with instruction, organization, and a balance of a price and pain,” he explained, laying out a series of cards. He tapped the silhouette. He ran his fingers along the perimeter, whispering an incantation. It moved under his touch, making a strange shivering cold run over my skin.

“The lesson has begun,” he murmured.

Inching my chair closer to the fire for warmth, I ran my fingers over the tableaux. One card represented a dark silhouette that had begun the spell. The other showed a dagger with blood dripping from the blade. The third displayed a female with her back arched, seemingly in the center of an erotic moment of bliss. I blushed when I examined it, not sure what it had to do with this lesson.

Jonas tapped the card. “Balance is important in Alchemy. If the mixture is too far in one direction, the result will be unstable. If there is pain, there should be pleasure as well. But if there is only one side or the other, accidents happen and the cost will be eternal.”

I chewed my lip before replying, glancing up at his gorgeous face. “Like Jax’s magic,” I surmised. His brother seemed to be rash, and while he was powerful, I doubted he calculated the balance required for his spells and concoctions. He acted on instinct, just like I did, but if I wanted to carve out my place in the Void among the clans, I needed to know my shit.

Jonas crossed his arms and hummed in agreement. “My brother and I make a good team. There’s a place for his brand of magic, but he pays a heavy price when it goes wrong.”

I shrugged. “If you mean what happened to his face, he also has the ability to alter the timeline. That’s a pretty incredible skill.” I had never heard of a mage that could alter time, although I was sure they existed. Jax was proof that it was possible.

Jonas swept his touch to the dagger card. “That’s where the price comes in. He didn’t find balance and now he’ll have to deal with the consequences. The result is his permanent disfigurement. The more powerful the spell, the higher the cost.” He frowned. “My brother suffers for his gift. Each time he changes the timeline, it burns away at his flesh. I’m the one who has to patch him up, and I’m assuming he used his time-altering abilities to break you two out of detention.
