Chapter 15

Sunday was as uneventful as the past two days had been, save for one major thing. David didn’t show. He didn’t call. He didn’t e-mail. Lexie was undeniably worried, and Jordan’s suspicion that everything was connected to the men in Cabin One grew. Meals were strained, but thankfully short. He thought about calling Lawson Graves despite Lexie’s earlier pleas not to say anything to the sheriff, even picked up the phone, but there was no dial tone.

Using the excuse that he’d tried to call his brother, he mentioned the phone to Lexie. She explained they lost service from time to time and did a good job of appearing unconcerned. If he decided to believe her, it made sense they hadn’t heard from David by phone, but the e-mail was satellite service.

After Lexie went to bed, Jordan considered e-mailing Graves. Once again he hesitated. If the sheriff didn’t read his own e-mails, if he had a secretary to screen them, Jordan didn’t want to inadvertently spread rumors around town if it happened that David was simply busy with his other case.

No, he had to trust Lexie. He might not know why she didn’t want the sheriff involved, but he knew her well enough to believe the reason must be a damn good one.

So, he’d wait and see what happened with the sunrise. Then again, whether David showed up or not, if Jordan went to court tomorrow, he’d have to leave Lexie here with those jerks. Seeing as he wasn’t buying the whole friends act they had going on, that wouldn’t happen, contempt of court or not. Hell, that was the very least he could do; his brother had faced down their parents with a gun to keep Marley safe.

He typed Justin a vague explanation that things had come up, and he wouldn’t make the fitting or dinner, but when he reached to send the e-mail, it dawned on him he could simply take Lexie along. The more he thought about that solution, the better it sounded. She’d be safe, and they’d have time to talk in the car. Away from the resort, she might be more willing to open up about what was really going on. And if for some crazy, insane reason he did decide to stay for dinner, she could be his buffer, and if needed, his excuse to get the heck outta there.

He deleted the email, shut down the laptop, and headed to his room feeling a little better now that he had a firm plan of action. Sleep took a while with thoughts of Lexie down the hall heating his blood, but eventually, exhaustion took over.

Monday dawned so early, Jordan thought it was still the middle of the night. Rocky waddled across his chest before jumping off the bed to run to the door. He squinted at his watch and groaned. Five-fifteen. He’d already pushed aside the covers and swung his feet over the side of the bed when he remembered he’d been leaving the door open at night exactly for this reason.
