Chapter 18
Carson gasped and felt his eyes widen. Jameson had tried to kill him? His mother said the man was supposed to help him.
"Jameson tried to kill Carson? And what proof do we have?" Lincoln demanded.
"Security footage from the kitchen," Doc said, his body language less lethal than it had been. "Jameson was in there right before Carson showed up to eat. And before you ask, I ordered specific nutrient dense meals to be prepared for Carson, so that's how his food was targeted specifically. How in the heck Jameson snuck past the kitchen workers is beyond me. No one recalls seeing him."
The tall red-haired woman that Maggie had been speaking with in the cafeteria yesterday entered the room. Once again, her hair and makeup were done to perfection. She wore a crisp well-fitting, gray pantsuit. Even Carson had to admit she was pretty, and he rarely noticed that kind of thing in women.
She sauntered up to the desk in a graceful, commanding sort of way. "Being a Manashan shaman, Jameson has a level of mentally abilities that are beyond any known vampire. However, even I was unaware of the level of power he possesses."
Lincoln snorted. "Are you saying he's using magic, Dr. Simpson?"
Carson wondered about the look of amusement on Lincoln's face. Carson totally believed in magic.
Dr. Simpson shook her head and clasped her hands behind her back. "If you want to call it that. In theory, shamans use the elements of nature and the spirit world to draw energy to perform their rituals and magic--for lack of a better term."
"So he can disable security systems and lock down systems with his mind?" Lincoln actually snorted, which Carson found strangely endearing.
"It appears so," Dr. Simpson concurred.
"Just fucking great." Lincoln threw his pen down on the desk. That sucker popped up and flew onto the floor.
Tommy entered the room next. Man, it was getting crowded in there. Carson wanted them all to leave so he could spend time alone with Lincoln.
Tommy tossed a file onto Lincoln's desk, which already overflowed with files and papers. How his lover found anything, Carson hadn't a clue. Lincoln raised a challenging eyebrow at Tommy, who merely pointed to the folder. Lincoln opened it and, as his eyes scanned the contents, his body tensed and his eyes widened. He wiped his hand over his mouth.
"Can I speak with you for a moment in the hallway?" Lincoln asked Tommy, who nodded, and they left the room together.
Doc approached Carson and asked how he was doing.
Carson's eyes were on the door where Lincoln had just exited. "I'm fine." He turned to Doc. "What's going on?"
Doc shrugged and continued to assess Carson visually. Lately, Carson felt like a rat in a cage. Carson tried to ignore Doc and the tension and uneasiness that flowed into his body, no doubt coming from Lincoln. A sinking foreboding filled Carson. Something was really wrong. Gods, how could things get worse?
After what seemed like forever--in reality only about ten minutes--Lincoln and Tommy returned.
