Chapter Sixteen
“I’m leaving,” Eliana called as she poked her head through Chris’s office door. It felt strange to be back after so long, but before allowing her to retrieve her things, MetriRx had to complete their investigation and prevent her from taking anything suspect with her. Today she had been escorted to get her possessions and leave. It had been easy. They had stripped Eliana’s old office of anything that could have been the company’s, from her computers and files to the pictures on the walls.
“Have you finished already?” he asked. Eliana nodded in the affirmative, her hair falling forward to hide her face for a moment. “Come on in, sit a minute.”
“I don’t think so.” Eliana looked behind her, not wanting to run into any MetriRx employees, especially a specific one. It was after hours, and the office was quiet, almost deathly so.
Oh, come on,” Chris encouraged. “No one is here.” He nodded off the security guard, and Eliana stepped in, perching on the edge of a worn leather chair that faced the desk. “Sorry for my appearance,” she started, “I didn’t expect to see anyone, including you.” Eliana was wearing a tight-fitting pair of jeans and a black cowl-necked sweater, short, high-heeled boots on her feet, light makeup, and no jewelry.
“Except for the dark circles under your eyes, you look fine,” Christopher assured her, running his eyes over her from head to toe as he never did when she was his employee. She squirmed under the intensity of his gaze.
“Are you sleeping at all?” Christopher returned his eyes to meet hers.
“I’m fine. I just look tired because I have less makeup on,” Eliana lied, embarrassed. “I try never to let the world see me this way.”
“It makes you look younger, that’s all. No less attractive.” His reassurance should have put Eliana at ease but did the opposite. “Look, I like you. You always impressed me with your ambition and your work ethic. I just want to help you land on your feet. Have you found a job yet?”
Eliana sat back in the chair, reassured by his statement. Perhaps she was wrong to feel that he was objectifying her. He was at least ten years her senior, balding, paunchy, and unattractive. Still, she guessed that some women would find him enticing, although she knew from office gossip that he was married to his work and lived alone.
“Not yet, but at least now I understand what happened,” Eliana began. “When Jeremy told me to go, I was completely blindsided. I want to assure you, Chris, I was never a spy for anyone. I loved this company, believed in our products. I was proud to sell them.”
“Eliana, you’re preaching to the choir. I told Jeremy over and over again that it couldn’t be you. He refused to believe me.” Christopher rocked back and forth in his squeaky executive chair as he spoke. It made Eliana uncomfortable, and she desperately wanted him to stop. She just needed to get out of here.
