When a person grows up having their every move scrutinized, even basic things like eating become anxiety-ridden. For me, years of having judgement passed on every piece of food put in my mouth has made me hyper aware of what I eat when other people are around. But still, if I have to eat one more rehab salad, I’m starting to seriously consider taking my chances out in the world with a killer who may or may not decide to make me their next target.

I shove the bowl away from me and try to ignore Sadie eyeing me from across the table.

“I’m surprised to see you here,” Siobhan comments, sliding into the seat beside Sadie. “Finally tired of hiding out during social times?”

Her voice is teasing, but it makes me self-conscious anyway. Even when I was here before, I carefully avoided group meals as often as possible. It’s easy to get away with having meals delivered to your room here. I would have been eating dinner in my room again if it hadn’t been for Siobhan getting called away for business and Sadie taking over for her.

Sadie isn’t quite as indulgent of my tendency to hermit away. For some unknown reason, Sadie actually likes the social aspect of eating lunch together in a depressingly sterile cafeteria where everyone is staring at each other like zoo animals.

“I just forgot how much I love eating overpriced vegetables surrounded by gossiping housewives,” I shrug sarcastically.

“They’re not all gossiping housewives, Nat.” She purses her lips as she exaggerates studying the people around us. “There’s at least three pro athletes, two musicians, and one legitimate actress here too.”

I blow a laugh out from between my lips. She’s right, of course, there are a handful of people here who legitimately keep their heads down and mind their own business. Basically, it’s safe to say if the person has a legitimate career, they’re probably not caught up on the gossip.

I try to force my muscles to relax.

It would probably be more helpful if a tray didn’t slam down on the table next to me right then. Logan drops into the chair next to me, his shoulder jostling mine as he makes no effort to acknowledge my personal space.

“You ran out of therapy awfully fast,” he comments, putting his arm across the back of my chair as he turns his body to address me.

I glance at him out of the corner of my eye, feeling extraordinarily claustrophobic with him in my space like this, but I can’t seem to choke out the words to tell him to fuck off. I try to shift away a little, but he only leans closer in on me.

When I turn to frown at him, he glances at my tray.

“What happened in therapy?” Siobhan asks, pulling my attention. She’s frowning when I look her way, and I wrinkle my nose because I had no intention of sharing that shitshow if the gossip didn’t make its rounds on its own.

“It was nothing,” I mutter.

Logan takes advantage of my distraction to grab my tray and leave with it.
