From there Major Dammer and the battalion went south over the hill to Porto Empedocle. For a three-mile stretch, row upon row of vineyards sloped gracefully towards the sea. The battalion paused for rest in an almond grove about two thousand yards north of Porto Empedocle.

At 1430 the attack on the town was made in a line of companies, three attacking east of a draw running north and south out of the town and three attacking west of it. Intent on reaching the port, Dammer's men did not stop to mop up the numerous snipers. Dammer did not meet any determined defense on the left flank of his approach to the sea, but on the right flank Captain Miller ran into the crews of a battery of dual-purpose coastal guns. After a short scrap Miller rounded up 91 German and 675 Italian prisoners. The battle was over by 1600.
