Ally parked her small Suzuki in the international terminal car park, got out and strode toward the arrivals lounge. The cool night goose-bumped her bare arms, the car keys jangling in her nervous fingers. As she neared the large glass doors, trepidation slowed her stride to a walk.

Dread set in, tripping up her spine to lodge in her neck muscles. The doors swished open to allow her entry then silently closed behind. The terminal’s distinctive smell enveloped her: plane fuel, coffee and new luggage.

She turned right, scanning the crowded arrivals hall. On a normal night the stores and cafés should have been closed but the strike had prompted some to stay open in an attempt to make a quick dollar. The coffee shop was doing a brisk trade, the newsstand had a line forming at the cash register. Only the florist remained shut.

And there he stood—alone—his long frame leaning comfortably against a wall, head buried in a newspaper.

Ally stopped fifty feet from her past, her stomach swirling with a thousand butterflies, and let the emotion wash over her. It was like a physical touch, tripping warm fingers of remembrance over her skin, leaving her short of breath and sweaty. Emptiness ached like a gaping hole in her chest for one brief second then was gone. In its wake, memories sent her body into its own little hum.

The warmt h of his arms wrapped around her, the gentle, erotic rasp of stubble from his chin as it brushed against her cheek.

She glanced at the airport clock above and realized the hands had stuck at eight o’clock.

Almost as if time stood still.

Once, an eternity ago now, she’d wished desperately for that to be true. Because at the precise moment she’d dragged herself onto a Sydney-bound plane, their future together was gone. Throughout those endless hours in the air, she’d sat alone and silently cried for the home they would never make, the family they would never have, for her pride and the naive expectations that had shaped her decisions.

And it was all encapsulated into one clichéd greeting card moment in a cold, busy airport.

She suppressed a shiver and hardened her heart.

Despite the short hair that barely touched his collar and a slight paleness to his skin, Finn hadn’t changed one bit. Those high cheekbones were as sharp as she remembered, his square jaw still with that kissable cleft dusted in stubble. All his features—some attractive, like his long-lashed emerald eyes, some downright out of place, like the noble nose with its broken bridge—were mishmashed to make a perfect package. He readjusted his body against the wall and Ally smiled humorlessly. Even after a long flight, Finn still appeared the epitome of cool in conservative jeans and sweater. Style was in his blood.

Yet… There was something disconnected about the way he stood there, about the way people passed by and he completely ignored them. He was a people person, thrived on the interaction and connection to other human beings. Now he seemed almost…lonely.

As she studied the man who was now a stranger to her, she continued to frown.
