Brutus is the black mouth’s meal and Cassius, the white. To us it may seem strange to have these two almost equal with he who propelled the sacrifice of Christ, but the assassination of Julius Caesar and the attempt to thwart the establishment of the Roman Empire was, to Dante, an unbelievable action, tantamount to supplanting God’s natural rule on earth.

Virgil approaches the great fiend. Dante huddles behind the Roman poet’s gale-breaking form. As they make the hairy side, Virgil commands Dante to clasp him around the neck, and with an opening available between the pounding wings, he rushes in and seizes the devil’s shag and climbs downward a cleft in the ice.

Down they climb, at one point sensing the shift in gravity (yes, Dante had a sense of the earth’s attraction but was certainly no Newton), and Virgil turns the other direction where down becomes up. Virgil explains that when Lucifer fell, he was driven feet first into the earth. He caused the huge crater of the Inferno on the topside and pushed the displaced soil into the mount of Purgatory on the other. They make their progress to that mountain of salvation.

At last, on Easter morning, the travelers reach the open air. Above them wink the stars of Heaven.
