The next morning, Marchand was up at dawn. He had his staff put out a large breakfast, and he personally answered the door when Specs and Lanzo arrived at 7.

“Mr. Livingston, I presume,” Specs said with a rare giggle.

Mickey laughed. “Close enough. Welcome bros,” he said, giving Specs a huge hug, followed by the same welcome for Lanzo. Mickey led them to the wide veranda where a sumptuous meal awaited them. Once finished, Mickey dismissed the staff after having them leave a small samovar of coffee on the breakfront behind their table.

They spoke softly and leaned in to hear one another.

“What ya got?” Marchand asked.

“I have a bad feeling about that Brax guy,” Specs said.

Marchand sipped his coffee and waited.

“Got himself arrested for beating on his girlfriend or wife or whatever she is.”

Marchand nodded. “Not good. Let’s replace him.”

“Don’t forget he’s got the uncle with the stereo shop,” Specs said. “Some kid there builds one-of-a-kind hidden compartments. We need that.”

“Uncle hip to the scene?” Marchand asked.

“No,” Specs said. “He’s an old dope fiend, but nah, he has no idea what’s going on. Health not good. Let’s put it this way—if he knows, he’s not involved other than to close his eyes at the right time. Brax swears the guy has no clue…but…family, so who knows?”

“Get rid of Brax—but don’t lose his distribution.”

“OK, Mr. Livingston,” Lanzo said. “It might take a while to get his contacts.”

“Drone him?” suggested Specs.

Marchand nodded. “Get some kid to do it. Pay him a grand to drone Brax for two days. We get the meet-up locations of every contract he’s got. And a picture of what they look like.

“Check the drone message boards—see if someone in L.A. looks like a good candidate to drone Brax,” Marchard added. “Make sure whoever it is didn’t buy his drone from my company.

Specs nodded. “OK, Boss…and who do we get to take over Brax’s territory? He just did the whole college circuit thing for us. The ISO caffeine.”

“How’s that going?” Marchand asked.

“Far as we know, fine. No reports of anything. Damn good money, too.”

“Let’s not do anything stupid to Brax until we get his contacts and know the college thing is good. OK? Check with me before we send him to Heaven, OK?” Marchand looked at both men.

“Yes,” they said in unison.

“Getting arrested for domestic abuse is a big red flag in my book. Guys like that…if they think that’s cool, they’ll do anything, including sing like a bird.”

Marchand stood up. The meeting was over.
