Chapter 23

From Russia with Cash

For the past year or so, throughout the Neon Nights writing and recording period, I’d been happily and quietly dating a guy called Craig Logan. He’d originally been in the eighties pop band Bros, and was now very successful in artist management, working for Roger Davies, who looked after artists such as Cher, Tina Turner and, a favourite of mine, Janet Jackson. Craig had known Hills and Terry for some years. After I’d first met him, briefly, at a television studio and we hit it off, Craig kept calling them both, asking if they thought I might be interested in going on a date with him.

‘What do you think?’ I’d asked Hills over dinner one evening. ‘He seems really nice.’

‘He is a lovely guy. You could do a lot worse,’ she advised me, like a stereotypical Jewish mother. ‘I think you should at least go out on a date.’

‘Well, maybe we should all go out together,’ I suggested.

So poor Craig had ended up taking me out on a date to one of my favourite London restaurants, Nobu, one Friday night, with Hills and Terry tagging along as chaperones – and he treated us all to a really lovely evening. Craig was charming, and pretty good to look at too, with soft brown eyes and fine, chiselled features. I got a few knowing looks from Hills that night: I think she could tell right away that I was hooked.

My relationship with Craig, as it turned out, was a hell of a lot more relaxed and under the radar than what I’d been used to with Julian and Jacques. After the public drama surrounding those two break-ups, I was more than happy to keep it that way. Craig was warm and kind, and he had a real romantic streak that appealed to me. Although we were both in the music industry, we hardly ever went to showbiz parties or big events. After all the craziness of travelling around and writing for the album, it was nice to come back to Craig, who was so laidback and normal. We’d spend weekends at his picturesque house in the country, going for walks, watching movies and cooking. I felt like I had something solid in my life.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to last. Geography once again put paid to what I thought might be a long romance when Craig was offered the prestigious job of running Roger’s office in Los Angeles. Here we go again, I thought. We were both happy at the time, but I did what I always did, and told him that he couldn’t possibly turn down such a fantastic opportunity. Although I didn’t want him to go, I wanted to be as supportive a girlfriend as I could be, and not clingy and selfish about it. I knew from bitter experience that our relationship would not survive it, and sadly I was right. As it turned out, Craig would be my last serious boyfriend before I met Kris five long years later.
