Chapter Twelve
DINNER WITH LYRIC ISN'T going well at all. Her phone keeps going off, and she seems annoyed with the person on the other end. She's immensely distracted, and her frustration's showing. She sets her phone on the table once again and tries to say something to me. Her phone buzzes again. She rolls her eyes as she picks her phone up once more.
"I'm really sorry about this," she says. "Em is just having some issues recently. I'm her go-to person. I'm the one who always talks her down. I'm so sorry."
"She knows you're out with me, doesn't she?"
"Of course she does, but that has nothing to do with this. She's had a terrible day at work. I think she just needs someone to sit with her and talk."
"I know she doesn't like me, Lyric, I get it."
"She doesn't like many peopleâdon't take offense to that, babe. When I become interested in someone, she is really cautious with that person."
"Is it because she likes you? I mean, as more than a friend?"
"Don't be silly, Dani! She is like my sister. It's never been like that with us. Plus, she's straight. It would never happen, for many reasons. She just doesn't want me to get hurt. Just like I never want to see her hurt."
"I understand." At least I try to. While eating I try to decide why Emma really has an issue with me. Maybe she senses things about me that no one else does?
Lyric's back on her phone, texting.
I get that she's Lyric's best friend, but something doesn't seem right with herâto me at least. Emma's got a look in her eye that sends chills through me. For sure, something isn't right.
"Does that mean you're not staying the night?" I give her the saddest eyes I can.
"Don't make me feel bad, please, Dani. I think she just needs someone to talk to. She's stressed out recently. I have to be there for her. She's my friend."
I sigh and turn my eyes away from Lyric. "It's all right. I was just looking forward to being alone with you for a while. And so far, you've spent most of your time chatting with her on the phone."
"I'm sorry, beautiful. I promise I'll make it up to you. I promise."
I try my best to smile through the disappointment. "Don't worry about it. Things happen, right? I'm sure I have a lot of stuff to do around the house anyway. I mean I've kind of been lazy recently, with my leg and all."
The waiter brings the check, and I hand him some money for the bill. She doesn't seem to notice the interaction at all. I stand, looking at her, still distracted. "Go help your friend out. We can get together some other time. I'm going to go home."
I get my phone out and scroll to the second window. There's an application I've recently saved there for a local cab company. I tap the screen on the application icon, enter my location, and hit send.
