The u-boat net also states that the master 19 crew, 3 DEMS gunners and 3 passengers died and that 127 crew, 3 gunners and 250 passengers were saved. On the other hand, South African History Online states that ‘A total number of 150 people died including the captain, crew and service personnel.’

13. TURAKINA

The Turakina (Captain James Boyd Laird), bound independently for Wellington from Sydney, Australia, when intercepted by the German Raider Orion (KrvKpt. Kurt Weyher) at 5pm on 20 August, 1940 when about 260 miles west of Taranaki. Set ablaze by gunfire before being sunk by torpedoes in position 38º33´S 167º12´E. Thirty-six died. Twenty-one, including wounded, taken prisoner by the Orion.
