Chapter 15

“Well?” Brooklyn asked.

I looked up from my computer and found my best friend bouncing from foot to foot in front of the counter.

“Well, what?”

“Letty!” she snapped.

“What?”

“It’s been five days. Five! And I feel like you’re holding out on the goods.”

Unfortunately, I wasn’t holding out.

River was.

And something I’d learned in the five days we’d been living together was that River Kent was more stubborn than I was. He was also good at flirting and better at cuddling.

“Nothing’s happened,” I told her.

“Nothing? How’s that possible?”

Oh, it was possible—frustratingly possible.

I should recap the last five days.

I’d apologized to Brooklyn for snapping at her. She’d explained she was genuinely worried and didn’t handle the situation well. Dinner at my parents’ went better than I thought it would and while I was there I did what River had suggested and gave into the good memories of my sister.

When Monday morning rolled around, River went to the Takeback office to talk to the guys about what Mrs. Simpson had found and I went to work. At closing, River came to the bookstore and picked me up. We went to dinner, talked about what was going on with his family, which was a welcomed change in topics. Then we watched a movie on my laptop and went to bed. That was it; we went to sleep with me on my side, River behind me holding me close.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday were much of the same with slight variations.

No kissing. No touching. No big heart-to-hearts.

Nothing.

Light conversation, good company, and cuddling.

It was weird.

“Okay, so this morning he came out of the bathroom after his shower without a shirt on.”

“And?”

“And nothing. He was shirtless.”

“That’s all you’re gonna give me?”

I rolled my eyes. “Seriously, you have a hot guy in your bed and you want more?”

“No, I want to know how you felt seeing your hot guy come out of the bathroom shirtless.”

I’d felt like running across the room, pushing him onto the bed so I could explore every ridge and valley of his abs. I wanted to climb astride him and ask him what had changed since that first day in my apartment when he’d kissed me stupid.

But I didn’t tell Brooklyn any of that. Instead said, “He’s changed. He’s affectionate but he’s careful. He teases me like he always has, he even flirts with me, but he won’t even kiss me. The strangest part is, his being there feels normal. No, not normal—it feels like he’s always been there.”

“He has always been there, Lets. You just have him in a new way.”

That was weird but true.

“Do you think he’s changed his mind?”

“About wanting to be with you?” she asked and I nodded. “No. I think he’s slowed things down because he wants more from you and he wants to make sure you’re in a place to give it to him.”

The pain that had been in my chest since Kiki had died clawed its way to the surface.

“I want to give him more,” I admitted.

“I know you do, honey. And I understand what’s holding you back.
