Twenty-Five

Roman had one leg out of the Jaguar before the shift had locked the transmission in park. He heard Nikki yelling and watched her trying to twist free of her attackers.

He wasn't exactly sure what he was shouting as he aggressively charged the group, but his mind vaguely registered two startled expressions and Nikki's slack jaw.

Roman cut loose with a roundhouse swing that connected on the side of the rangy blonde's jaw. The man reeled backward, slamming onto the hood of a BMW before sliding down into a head-lolling, seated position.

Suddenly, Nikki was dropped free of Edgar's embrace, landing rather sloppily against the front fender of a Fiat. She babbled and waved at Roman, discovered he wasn't paying the least bit of attention to her. With a shrug, she decided there was nothing for her to do but watch the ruckus.

The man-mountain was bigger close-up than Roman anticipated. But a slow mover. His fist drove a punishing blow into the big man's ribs.

The only response was a grin.

Roman delivered a quick, hard jab to the giant's jaw.

The grin grew wider.

Cantrell rearranged his body into a forward stance. He punched again. Hitting the bruiser's neck with the knuckles of his first two fingers, swiftly followed by a knife-hand blow and backed with a side kick.

Nikki was impressed. Cantrell was definitely black belt. His actions were a choreographer's dream. Then she winced. Edgar had easily weathered the martial arts attack. Grin intact. He responded with a simple but very effective left hook.

Roman staggered, knees buckling. He felt as though he'd slammed into a brick wall. Shaking his head and wiping the blood from his mouth, he was set to issue a Krav Maga counter attack he had learned from a Mossad trainer, when the giant turned away, picked up his companion and lumbered down the exit ramp.

A dozen seconds later the only thing that confronted Roman was the sound of an engine ignition followed by peeling tires. He stumbled over to where Nikki was reorganizing her purse and grabbing up her shoes. "Christ, are you okay? Who the hell were those two? Muggers?"

"A couple of friends."

His eyebrows arched. "Yeah, I noticed how affectionate they were." He massaged his jaw.

"I think they were just trying to protect me."

Roman gave her a look.

"Well, you did charge in like...like..." She didn't bother to finish, watching as he returned to the Jaguar, pulled it into a visitors spot and take a bag of groceries from the rear seat. "What's all this?"

"Dinner."

Nikki followed him to the glass enclosure, watching while he viciously punched the elevator call button. She waited until the door closed and they were slowly rumbling to the second floor before speaking again. "I was rather impressed by your heroic battle cry."

"My battle cry?"

"Unhand that woman." She smiled on hearing him groan. "My knight in shining armor." Her lashes fluttered. "You are quite the handsome knight dressed in your finest." Her fingers brushed the dust and grime off the lapels of his grey silk blazer and straightened the collar on his white shirt.
