The documents from Kohl’s safe were mundane and uninteresting for the most part. Nothing that would incriminate Kohl like a searchlight in the darkness freezing him escaping against the prison wall. But there were deeds to a house, a hundred miles west of Zehedan in the desert that had sent needles bending on the screens of Hennessy’s research elves.

“It’s not on any of his registered property lists with the agency,” Hennessy had said, plopping the file down on the table in front of Kane in the hotel room.

Kane leafed through. “Keeping things secret from the secret keepers paints an even more suspicious profile. The more I find out about Kohl, the more I don’t like him. I take it he’s gone to ground?”

“He hasn’t been seen since we lit out of his residence.”

“So, a secret house, out in the desert seems like it might be a reasonable place to start looking for him?”

“Yes.”

Kane considered for a moment. “Or it might lead us to someone else…”

Hennessy nodded. “You thinking Clark? Midnight? Both?”

“I’m thinking all sorts of things.” Kane got up. “I say we get going…”

Hennessey put a hand on his chest and pushed him back onto the bed and climbed on. “One battle at a time, soldier.”

“Bingo,” said Kane.
