Sorensen’s massive form fell like a missile and slammed right into Hoor, sending both berserkers tumbling further down the docking bay’s central path. Maddock’s attention was arrested by the sound of metal clinking on stone. Looking down, he found Gungnir laying not five feet away from him. Without hesitation, he picked it up and regrouped with Bones, both men beaten and exhausted. With each passing second, Maddock felt a strange pulling sensation, as if something was trying to draw his soul out of his body. Dammit, he thought, realizing it was the weapon reacting to his physical state. He needed to calm down before he changed. He ducked behind one of the longships with Bones, away from the savage battle taking place between the two berserkers. Closing his eyes, he willed his pulse to slow his, visualizing the influence of the spear retreating like an outgoing tide. “You all right?” Bones asked, seeing his friend struggle. Maddock softly nodded. “Sure, as long as I don’t get too worked up.” Bones laughed. “Good luck with that.” The chuckled was short-lived when he remembered what happened to Haugen. “That asshole just stood there and put a bullet in his head.” Grinding his teeth, he glanced back to Maddock who looked like he was about to pass out. “My bad, I’m just pissed is all. He was a good man.”
Maddock nodded, trying not to let the sentiment trigger him.
“We need to go,” Bones said, taking a quick look. “Back the way we came.” Their hiding spot was bashed into from behind, sending the longship screeching across the floor. Only his quick reflexes saved Bones from becoming a crimson stain. Diving out into the open, he rescued himself from certain death, only to leap right back into the path of it. Hoor stood over him, his eyes bloodshot and manic. He was twitchy and drooling like a rabid dog, which wasn’t too far from the truth. Sorensen had fought the changes, and in doing so, retained some of his humanity. Hoor, on the other hand, had embraced the transformation, losing himself in the process. There was no turning back for him. Where is Sorensen? Maddock wondered as he dove into Bones, pushing him out of the way of Hoor’s descending claws. They rolled together and then got up and ran, bolting for the tunnel entry. He prayed they could get there before Hoor figured out what they were doing.
They didn’t.
The black-furred berserker leaped over them and landed in between them and their exit, forcing both men to skid to a halt. Neither had any weapons, except for Maddock who still held Gungnir. From what they’d seen so far, the spear had one ability, changing someone into a berserker. It didn’t actually seem to do much else. Suddenly, something yanked him from behind, spinning him around. It was Bones, shoving him back the other way. If they were to get out of the docking bay alive, it wouldn’t be through the front door. They’d have to venture deeper into the cavern and hope to lose the beast there.
