Chapter 19

Wayan began walking backward into the water for their first underwater experience.

"You'll see a coral garden," he explained as they followed him out into the water. "And keep on the lookout for manta rays resting in the sand. It's difficult to see them because they blend in so well. I'll point a ray out if I see one, so be sure to keep watching me. Can't talk under water, so keep your eyes on me, and I'll point out things of interest." He smiled before positioning his mask, waving, and disappearing below the surface.

Sarah shook her hands as her mouth clenched around the regulator. Sure, she had done this in a pool, but this was different. This was her first time relying on a regulator and tank in open water. When she glanced over at Julian, she found that she was actually glad that he was with her.

I’m so glad that I’ll have someone to share this incredible experience with. Uh-oh, what did I just think? Does that mean that I’m thinking about seeing him again? Maybe dinner again? He sure is easy to be with.

And why doesn’t he seem at all nervous. If I didn't know better, I'd think he'd done this before. Well, I guess he’s just used to learning new things for his movies. He’s probably had to learn all kinds of sports for movie roles.

As Sarah descended beneath the clear water, an entirely new world opened up. She was amazed by the colors of the coral and the assortment of sea life. She looked in every direction and saw that she was in the middle of a world of strange colorful plants and fish – far more than she’d ever seen snorkeling.

She didn't remember all the names, but she recognized a lot of what she was seeing from the photos Wayan had just shown them moments earlier.

She tapped lightly on Julian's arm and pointed out a ray lying in the sand. He gestured toward a gathering of sea moths not far from them.

As they drifted along, Sarah wanted to stay under water forever. Previously, coral was the hard rock formations that she’d seen at shops in beach towns. But live coral swayed with the flow of the water and came in many shapes – round, tubular, wispy lace. And the vibrant colors invaded her senses – bright pink, turquoise, green, yellow.

At one time, Sarah thought that not being a strong swimmer would prevent her from becoming a diver. Luckily, she'd seen a documentary that explained it was more a matter of being comfortable in water than being a strong swimmer. That documentary had been the impetus that started her down the path to becoming a diver.

In her amazement over all she was seeing around her, Sarah had no sensation of time passing. She gave up all responsibility for paying attention to the amount of air remaining in her tank to Wayan, who regularly checked both Sarah’s and Julian’s regulators. Later Sarah would accept that responsibility
