Chapter 16
Simon pushed the door open, the bells suspended from the handle jangling. He was nervous and had been all morning. Nothing was going to happen other than an apology and a few tears but he was nervous anyway. Michael wasn’t going to like what he had to say.
He knew Michael saw this as an opportunity to sweet talk him into coming home but it wasn’t going to work. The evidence that they were over had been piling up for weeks and last night made it obvious they were kidding themselves, playing at a romance that no longer existed. This breakup was their fate. They might as well end it here.
The place was crowded, almost filled to capacity by a couple dozen people settled at tables chewing and talking. He found Michael at one against the far wall. Their eyes met and Michael got up from his chair and smiled. The expression slid from his face a little at a time the closer Simon got. He hadn’t bothered hiding the bruise with makeup. He wanted Michael to see what he’d done and judging by the pained look on his face, he was getting a very good view. So were a few other people in the restaurant who glanced at him, their gazes sticking a bit too long. He didn’t care. He wasn't the one who needed to be ashamed of the mark on his face.
“Thank you for coming,” Michael pulled the chair out for him before sliding back into his own.
He nodded back and for a moment, they sat in silence. He had nothing to say and Michael was busy casting glances between his face and the table.
“Does it still hurt?”
“A little.”
“I’m sorry, Simon. You have no idea how bad I feel. I shouldn’t have hit you.”
“No, you shouldn’t have.”
“I want you to know I never meant to hurt you. I just…I wasn’t thinking.”
He didn’t know what he was supposed to say to that so he didn’t say anything.
“I know I don’t deserve another chance, but…I love you,” he pled, hands clenched together on the table as he leaned forward. “I don’t want to know what it’s like living every day without you. Please…give me another chance.”
“Why?” He asked with this arms folded across his chest to keep Michael from attempting to hold his hand.
Michael blinked at him, his expression turning to confusion. “What do you mean?”
“Why should I want to get back together when it’s just going to be more of the same? I’m tired of the yelling and the lectures. I’m tired of you blowing up over nothing. If I’m just a whore always after a new guy while your back is turned why keep me?”
“I told you I didn’t mean that. I don’t think you’re a whore.”
“I don’t believe you,” he shook his head, “and I think last night proves my point. I say one word and you automatically jump to the conclusion that I’ve been with someone else. If you don’t think I can be faithful why bother with this?”
“It wasn’t just one word.
