“Rough night?”

Ella flashed her mother a small smile and turned back to pouring herself some orange juice. Her mom didn’t know the half of it. Rough night was one phrase for it, though not rough in the way that her mother thought. She’d woken up that morning feeling bruised, as though Ema’s fingers had pressed hard into her skin, as though her soft kisses had left marks on her.

“I’m pretty good,” she lied, putting the juice back into the refrigerator. “Taylor’s going to be feeling it though. We had to carry her home.”

She mentally cursed herself for saying ‘we.’ But her mother didn’t comment on it.

“Well, I guess it was the bachelorette party she wanted,” was all her mother said, bending her head back to the paper she was examining on the table.

“What are you working on?” asked Ella, wanting to change the subject.

“Seating plans for the wedding,” groaned her mother.

Ella chuckled and pulled out a seat, sinking down onto it. She pulled the paper towards herself, taking a look at it, little sticky notes with people’s names on them fluttering as the paper moved. Anything to take her mind off last night. Anything to take her mind off Ema.

“You can’t have Aunt Cathy sitting at the same table as Uncle Bob,” she said, scanning over the names.

“Oh lord no,” said her mother. “Did I do that?”

Ella nodded. She removed the sticky note with her very liberal Aunt Cathy’s name on it and moved it as far away from Republican Uncle Bob’s name as possible.

“Thank you, sweetie,” said her mother. “Oh, and whilst I’ve got you here, I need the name of your plus one. I’ve got so many ‘plus ones’ floating around on that chart that I don’t know which is which.”

“Plus one?” asked Ella, frowning at her mother.

“Yes, you know, your date to the wedding. I assume you’re bringing one? It’s sort of expected, and you know how Taylor is about doing the expected.”

Ella’s heart started to thud in her chest. As soon as she heard the phrase plus one there had been only one person she had thought of. The one person that she couldn’t possibly bring to the wedding. She swallowed nervously.

“You can bring a friend,” her mother said. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be a date. Just bring someone from work or something. Anyone will do. Make up the numbers, you know how it is.”

Quickly, Ella drained her glass of juice and stood up.

“Fine,” she said. “I’ll work on it. I’ll let you know later. I gotta get out of here now though.”

She bent and dropped a kiss on her mother’s cheek before fleeing the house.

Outside the morning was bright and warm, soft air caressed her cheeks. And all Ella wanted to do was lie down on the lawn and go back to the obliviousness of sleep. Her life felt like it was slowly spiralling out of her control. Not for the first time, she wished that she could just live in a cave all alone, far, far away from everyone else.
