Chapter 15
Anya
I resentfully put a hand on Vigoâs shoulder for balance as he bends before me, latching the metal cuff around my ankle and locking the padlock that secures it to my leg. The standing mirror shows our reflection and I see how empty my soul is through my eyes. They used to be a vibrant shade of sapphire and now they are a cool, gray-blue, open wide and vacant.
Did they look that way before I saw Ezra tonight?
Vigo stands, turning to face the mirror and blocking my reflection as he combs his fingers through his wavy hair. Then, he straightens his jacket.
I canât help but to think that mirror would shatter nicely into sharp edges.
âIâll return in a couple of hours. Just keep quiet and donât do anything stupid, hmm?â
Vigo turns to me, slipping an arm around my waist and drawing me close. I turn my head away so I donât have to look at him, but he grabs my chin and forces me to regardless.
âDo not worry, little doll. Papà will return to take care of you.â His hand slips down over my ass and squeezes. âI might even be generous tonight and let you come on my cock if you behave yourself.â
Iâm tempted to laugh.
To think that the pleasure of coming on Vigo Vittoriâs cock should be incentive enough to change my mind about killing myself is absurd.
Kill myself?
Have I decided to kill myself?
I swallow the retort that threatens. I donât really have it in me anymore to spare the energy and Iâm just ready to be done.
But am I really ready?
Heâs disappointed in my lack of response, though he doesnât let on. He enjoys knowing heâs tormented me into responding out of anger or fear or frustration, and Iâve learned that denying him that gratification makes me feel better on some level.
He shoves me backward and I stumble, landing roughly on the bed behind me. He gives me a look, almost as if he knows what Iâve been thinking about, but thankfully, he leaves without another word.
I rise to sit on the edge of the bed where heâs left me. I feel a certain sense of satisfaction in that final look heâs given me. It was a look of confusion, frustration, morbid curiosity.
He knew death was on my mind.
I breathe deeply and weigh my survival on a scale of truth.
Am I so certain that no one can save me? Yes.
Will ending my life take the pain away? Yes.
How horribly will Ezra mourn my loss when he hears about it? Terribly, but then he can focus on saving himself.
Tears well at the thought of what this will do to him, but I know heâll be better off when Iâm no longer a concern. Though the thought of leaving him permanently feels like a dagger to my gut, I know I want this.
I want death.
I want this horror story to end.
The affirmation in my mind brings me a strange sort of calmâthe peace of knowing that Iâve made a decision, right or wrong.
