The day stretches endlessly before me. I spend part of it dodging boats and allowing people on the bridge to photograph me, but mostly I miss Lucie. She must be worried sick; I would be.

To pass the time, I rehash the choreography from last night. Over and over again, I relive the movements and the sensation of dancing. In reality, I’m swimming in circles, flapping my wings and looking possessed.

When the sun dips below the horizon, I climb out of the foul Seine and back up the stone stairs. People are everywhere, and I need somewhere private to transform.

I duck behind a large stone pillar as my body tingles and stretches. Slowly, the feathers disappear. My waist-length hair falls over my shoulders, and soon I’m wearing my dance clothes, leather jacket, and boots. I stick my hand into my pocket, and my heart drops. My Navigo card is missing. Damn it. How is that possible? Did it fall out while I was running?

Since I have no money or Métro pass, I walk to the Opéra in my unusual outfit. A few people stare at me, but Parisians are used to strange clothes in the name of fashion, and I keep my head up. If I look confident, people will think I intentionally dressed like this.

This isn’t how I wanted to arrive at the audition. Not that it matters—the role is Lucie’s—but I can still dream.
