Luis Moreno froze at the door to the hospital break room.
His head spun. He cradled his stitched-up hand and wondered if the painkillers had already taken hold and he’d hallucinated the whole conversation.
But no, he’d literally just swallowed them with water and made his way up to the main floor to give a quick thanks to Francine for helping out his sister. No way was he drugged up yet. And he wasn’t dreaming. Unfortunately.
Holy shit. Ginny might not be carrying Jacob’s baby.
He leaned against the wall, numb with shock. He’d heard Jacob’s name as he reached the door, and a quick peek showed Payton and Francine engaged in conversation. He hadn’t planned to eavesdrop. He’d ducked back automatically, curious as to what they were saying about his sister’s friend, and bam, the truth had exploded at him like a fucking array of bullets.
He heard the rustle of paper and carefully stepped back until he was hidden in another hallway. What should he do? He didn’t think he could pull off going in there to thank Francine now. He’d probably question her, and half of him didn’t know if he could handle more truth.
Was it a miracle and truly Jacob’s baby?
Or was Ginny lying to herself and the whole town?
Damn, he felt as if he was caught up in the crazy soap opera Ginny loved as her guilty pleasure. This whole day had been a clusterfuck of mega proportions. He’d tried to go see Mallory this morning with a bunch of roses he’d bought from Pushing Up Daisies and beg her to talk to him. He was sick over the incident with Lacey and just wanted his girlfriend back. Luis hoped a heartfelt apology with a damn good explanation might help right things.
The flowers thrown in his face told him it was a big fat no.
So, he’d slunk back to work at the club, and on his way back out he found one of the members trying to change a tire. The guy had looked like he’d never gotten his hands dirty, so Luis offered to help. The jack was one of those cheap ones only to be used on occasion, and combined with his distraction over Mallory, the damn thing had collapsed and sliced his hand open.
Luis had scared the poor guy shitless. With blood everywhere, he’d wrapped it up, told the guy to call management to help him with the tire, and took off for the hospital. Thank God his hand wasn’t crushed, but he definitely needed stitches. He was supposed to be meeting Ginny at the house in a few minutes, but the damn accident had thrown him off schedule.
After the ER, he planned on stopping in quick to thank Francine, then heading home to hang with his sisters, and mooching a big sympathy dinner from Marisol. Instead, he had this stuff in his head he couldn’t un-know, and Luis had a feeling it was gonna be bad. Especially if anyone talked or found out about Jacob.
