Chapter Sixteen

Nik

The next morning, Vicki goes with me to pick up Divya from Mike’s. She’s nervous but smiles at me when we pull up. "Divya’s going to love you," I tell her as I shut off the engine.

"God, I hope so." She takes a deep breath.

Just then the front door opens, and Mike waves us to come inside. I get out and walk around to open the door for Vicki. When I take her hand, she’s shaking, so I pull her into my arms and hold her. "Stop worrying."

"Kids are very intuitive." She tells me.

"That’s why you don’t have anything to worry about. She will love you."

She looks up at me with her big brown doe eyes and I chuckle as I hug her tight, then throw my arm around her shoulder and guide her up the walk.

Mike is still standing in the front door watching and grinning. "Well, good morning you two."

"Good morning," Vicki answers.

"Where’s Divya?" I ask looking inside.

"She’s eating breakfast."

"Come on." I lead Vicki in.

When we walk into the kitchen, Divya is sitting at the table buttering her toast, looking like the little princess she is. Vicki whispers, "Nik, she is stunning!"

"Yes, she is, isn’t she?" I answer, then walk over to her. "Morning, Boo. Are you serving Uncle Mike toast for breakfast?"

She grins and giggles at me. "Don’t be silly, Daddy. Uncle Mike drinks that icky stuff like you."

Then she spots Vicki and stops.

"Divya, this is Vicki. Vicki, this is my little princess, Divya."

Vicki walks forward, smiling. "It’s very nice to meet you, Divya."

Divya looks from Vicki to me, then back to Vicki.

She’s putting it together. Kids are very intuitive.

I slide in the seat next to her, put my arm around her and hug her tight. "Divya, Vicki is a dancer."

She blinks stunned by this revelation. "She’s a dancer?"

Then she looks at Vicki.

Vicki smiles a beautiful smile. "Yes, I am, and your Daddy wants me to teach you to dance, would you like that?"

My princess looks shyly at her, but nods her head.

Mike comes inside and asks, "Can I get you two anything? Orange juice, coffee, tea?"

"No, thanks, I’m good." Vicki answers.

"I’ll have a cup of tea."

While Mike pours it up, Divya stares at Vicki. No one says a word. We let her absorb on her own this new woman being introduced into our lives.

When Mike serves the tea to me, Divya picks up her cup and takes a sip with me. It reminds me of the early years when we had tea parties with her dolls.

"It’s good." I reassure her.

Her eyes lock onto my face. Then she leans over and whispers in my ear. "She’s very pretty, Daddy."

"Yes, she is," I whisper back. "Like you." I tweak her nose, and she grins. Then she kisses me on the cheek, snuggles up tight, and turns her big blue eyes on Vicki.

"Is my Daddy going to dance with you too?"

Vicki looks at me, and I wink at her. She grins, then tilts her head, and nods. "As a matter of fact, I am going to teach your Daddy to dance too.
