Epilogue

Two years later

JIMMY BUFFET MUSIC WAFTED over the sound system on the back patio. Children laughed and splashed in the pool that sparkled in the afternoon sunshine. It was their daughter, Marnie’s, first birthday. Cassie watched Dan holding her up in the pool as he tried to teach her to swim. Pam’s husband, Andy, was holding up their daughter, Alyssa. The two fathers were analyzing their daughters’ strokes and kicks.

“Aren’t they just the cutest things?” Cassie said from her lounge chair.

Pam, her new business partner, nodded. “They sure are. Before we know it, they’re going to be swimming the length of the pool.”

Cassie giggled. “I meant our husbands.”

Pam nodded. “Oh, right. Of course.”

Once Cassie had won the Market Busters contest, Dan had talked her into starting her own business, her previous timeline be damned. Only she didn’t have a timeline anymore, just a sensible idea of what she could handle. And it was sensible to bring Pam in as a partner and go out on her own. Marion watched their babies at the nursery situated right in their small office. And even though Cassie had eschewed her timelines and rigid lists, everything was working out splendidly.

Hal was in charge of the barbecue grill, but he was watching Dan, too. His apron had once read, “Blow the cook,” but Hal had blotted out “Blow” and written “Kiss” instead. His girlfriend, Margie, had insisted, and he’d agreed without even a smidgen of an argument.

Dan caught Cassie’s gaze and sent her an air kiss, which she promptly returned.

“You two are disgusting,” Pam said, rolling her eyes.

“I know. Isn’t it great?”

“It’s been two years since the second wedding. No urges to run? No panic?”

“Not even a whisper.” Cassie watched Dan climb out of the pool and acquiesce to Marion’s request to cuddle the baby. Granny had thankfully only brought her parrot to the party; she usually brought her whole menagerie over. The parrot leaned off her shoulder to preen Marnie’s hair, which made them all giggle. Even though Andromeda wasn’t exactly the grandmotherly type, Marnie and Alyssa had more grandmother than they’d ever need in Marion and Granny.

Cassie sighed. “I know what they mean when they say ‘so happy I could burst.’ That’s exactly how it feels.” She caught Pam watching Andy swinging Alyssa around. “Aw, you know what I mean. It’s just that life is so…normal. Mom’s been in town for six months, though she’s over her two-year-married mark, which is her limit. But for now I can pretend she’s a normal mother.”

“Are you going to Roger’s wedding next weekend?” Pam asked.

“For the entertainment value alone. I can’t wait to see what Grandma Betty wears.”

Pam giggled. “Something bright, I’m sure.”

“Too bad they had to postpone the wedding from January. They were both as anxious as kids on Christmas Eve to finally get married.”

“Who would have figured the plastic surgeon he chose was a quack? Roger’s nose…” She just shook her head.

Cassie tried to hold back her giggle. “We thought it was just swelling and it would go down…eventually.
