We arrive at the reception hall in time for me to meet up with the party bus, and the wedding party takes a few more photos outside. Damien winks at me and heads inside.
I sit at the bridal table beside my sister during dinner, glancing toward where Damien is sitting beside Major, a good friend of Blairâs brother Maddox.
Harlowe leans over. âCome to the bathroom with me? I need some help.â
When I agreed to be her maid of honor, I didnât know being on train duty so she doesnât pee on it was part of the job. âSure.â
Arm in arm, we head for the bathroom. But she doesnât go into the stall. Instead, Harlowe leans against the sink and folds her arms. âSo, is Damien doing okay?â
I nod slowly, wondering if this was the real reason she dragged me to the bathroom. âHe and Major know each other, I guess.â
She studies me through narrowed eyes. âWhatâs the deal with him, really?â
âHeâs my date,â I say slowly, like Iâm talking to a child.
âDonât bullshit me, Nancy. We talk basically every day and I never heard a word about any guy until this morning.â
âWe work together at the museum,â I say defensively.
âWhat does he do there?â
âWhy does that matter?â I shoot back. âNow you sound like Mom.â
Harlowe gives me a full-on death glare. âDonât even go there with me.â
I immediately feel guilty. âIâm sorry, Harlowe. Heâsâheâs on a construction crew there.â
She nods. âOkay, so, heâs a blue-collar guy. Doesnât seem like youâd have a lot in common.â
âWe have about as much in common as you and Darby did.â
âLook, Nancy, Iâm not trying to give you a hard time.â She rests her hand on my arm. âYou can date whoever you want to, but as your big sister, I have to know whoâs in your life. I wonât stand by and let another Curtis come in and destroy you.â
âDo you really think Iâd let that happen?â I blink rapidly, trying to keep the tears at bay.
âThis is coming out all wrong.â Harlowe pulls me into her arms. âI think youâve been through a lot of shit that youâre still working through. I think you really want and deserve love. And I think youâre really emotionally vulnerable right now. And itâs important to me that whoever comes around you is who he says he is. I need to know that youâre going to be taken care ofâin the ways that really matter, not per Momâs definition.â
I draw a deep breath. âI invited him here because Momâs so worried about how weâIâwill look to the family after everything thatâs happened. So I brought a hot guy to shut everyone up.â
âWell, that backfired,â my sister says with a smirk. âHeâs so hot, people canât stop talking about him. Especially the way he looks at you. Thatâs not an act.â
âWeâ¦kissed on the way here,â I admit. âI donât know how it happened. But now Iâm all confused.â
âIs he nice to you?â
âOf course, heâs nice.â
âRespectful?â
âYes.â
âYouâre attracted to him?â
âWho wouldnât be?â
âThenâ¦maybe you should have some fun, little sister.
