Back at the precinct, Emerson plopped down in her chair. After lunch, she’d finally been able to ditch Lyle without hurting his feelings. The last thing she needed was him complaining about her again.

She pulled the business cards from the evidence bag and began making calls. The doctor’s office would re-open on Monday. She called the hair salon and spoke with the stylist. The young woman told Emerson she’d cut April’s hair a couple of times, but didn’t remember anything about her. The third business card—Casey Quinn Photography—didn’t have a phone number, email address, or website. She did an Internet search, but found nothing, so she Googled his name. There were dozens of men and women named Casey Quinn.

Nikki strolled up to her desk. “Hey, what’s happening?”

“Zero,” Emerson replied. “I got nothing. You?”

“Since we don’t have April’s phone, I filed records requests with all the wireless carriers. We’ll hear back soon.” Nikki peered into the small wooden box. “Whatcha got?”

“I found this at April’s.”

Nikki sat. “We can split them up.” She glanced over her shoulder before leaning close. “I overheard someone in UC mention that Toby’s working the case Doug had.”

“What did he say?”

“He’s made inroads with a drug gang.”

“Anything else?”

“They’re tight-lipped, so it’s gonna be a while before he gets any legit names.”

Emerson’s hopes fizzled. That’s not news. “Thanks for letting me know.”

Nikki took a handful of business cards and returned to her desk. Turning back to her task, Emerson called the realtor.

“Hi, this is Cathy.”

“Hi, Cathy, this is Detective Easton, Arlington County Police.”

“I already donated.”

“I’m calling about the homicide investigation of April Peters. I found your business card in her things.”

“Hmm. I remember her. She contacted me a number of months ago. She wanted to rent, but everything I showed her was out of her price range. I suggested she use a roommate finder and share a place.”

“Did she ever bring anyone with her when you took her apartment hunting?”

“No, she was alone.”

“Did she mention a boyfriend, significant other, or a special friend?”

“I don’t remember. Was she a short gal with purple hair?”

“No, she was average height with long, dark brown hair.”

“Oh, I’ve confused her with someone else I had worked with. I’m sorry, I don’t remember her.”

After thanking her, Emerson hung up. “So frustrating.”

Bing!

She glanced at the incoming email, then clicked on it.

“Are you reading?” Nikki called over.

“Sure am.”

The results of the tox report were in. April Peters had died from asphyxiation due to strangulation. Like their first victim, the drug, ketamine, had been found in her blood stream.

Nikki rushed over. “How did we get this back so quickly?”

“The Captain must’ve called in a favor,” Emerson said. “I’ve never gotten a tox report back this fast.”

“You mentioned reviewing surveillance at the club. Any progress?”

“It’s slow going. Everyone talks to the bartender, but a lot of the members are masked.”

“Do you think the perp met April at The Dungeon?”

“Possible, but the first vic wasn’t a member.”

“I’m thinking we stake out the place,” Nikki said. “It’s easier to catch a killer if we put ourselves in his path.
