I’m leaning on the railing of the deck the next evening, gazing out at the water, when Elizabeth walks up behind me and wraps her arms around my waist.

“You have the most delicious scent in the world,” she whispers.

It’s not true because for me it’s her scent of lavender and freshness.

“Something wrong?” she asks when I stay silent.

While she was preparing dinner, I spent some time answering emails and returning phone calls. “No, baby. Just the usual work stuff.” It’s not technically a lie.

“Can that be cured with a warm meal?”

“It was already cured the moment you touched me.”

“You know how to make a woman swoon, Ryan Price. Come on, I’m going to conquer your stomach now.”

And she does—with marinated chicken, mashed potatoes, and veggie salad. Her culinary skills turn out to be as impressive as everything else she does.

After we clean our dishes, Elizabeth suggests having a walk on the beach. When I carry our jackets outside, I find her staring down at her toes embedded in the sand, her long hair blowing wildly behind her. A nice breeze is slightly chilly, so I take one jacket and wrap it around Liz and then put my arms around her. She is staring straight ahead now, deep in her head, and I let her be for a while and keep holding her.

These last few days she was so happy, smiling all the time. But I also noticed how more than once her eyes became sad and the taut expression on her face told me the hush of grief was still visiting.

After some time I bring my lips to her temple and, kissing her there, I tell her softly, “You’re sad.” It’s not a question, it’s a statement. I know if she wants to elaborate, she will.
