I no longer feel guilty, I think Mackenzie’s starting to rub off on me, about staying at her place a few nights a week. It was on these days that I was happy and on the days I did not I was not. Those nights my body ached to be with her, my heart feeling like it could burst without her. And Rich is so caught up in his Africa trip that the bastard doesn’t even notice. Hell, he didn’t even notice that I wasn’t there when he left, if he did he would have blown up my phone. As he was driving to New Beginnings I was at Mackenzie’s apartment, making us breakfast in bed. It feels good to move at our own pace, to not have to think about my soon to be exhusband. We laugh and talk, eating our food when we can, as the sun slowly makes its climb high into the sky. By mid-day we’re ready to leave and head to the house. As we walk out of her unit we find a notice taped to her front door. Apparently they’ll be working on the pipes in this building next week and they warn occupants to not use the water.

“Good thing you’ll be with me,” I say with a smile before leaning in and kissing her on the cheek.

She grins back and even now that smile has the ability to take my breath away, in this moment I feel like all is right in the world, and then she takes my hand as we walk downstairs. We share a kiss before she climbs into her truck and I get into my sedan with her following me back to the house. The neighborhood looks different to me today, almost like I’m visiting here after not being here for a long time but I was here just yesterday. Everything about my life that came before Mackenzie no longer feels real and everything after feels like my true life. A double life takes a lot out a person and I’m no exception. I park, get out and I stretch my arms in the driveway as I wait for Mackenzie, who got caught at a red light and who I see pulling into my neighborhood. When she gets out I taunt her by saying I win and we both share a little laugh. We settle onto the couch and I’m hit with an almost crushing sense of sadness. This, this right here should be my life and not a “vacation” from my actual one. I want it to be like this, with Mackenzie, forever. We could be happy and we could make this work in a way Rich and I never, ever could. If we could marry in this state I’d marry her right now, her small character defects notwithstanding. She hides a coldness, an indifference, towards everyone in the world, everyone but me it would seem. You can tell that she’s worked on hiding this part of her character, probably all her life, but there is compassion buried deep in her shell.
