Chapter Nine

Timing was everything, and as luck would have it, they had none. After Lola had woken up during their conversation on the porch, Abby had gone to bed. She knew Ian was disappointed that their night had ended so abruptly. But it was best that way.

She’d revealed more to Ian standing there in the dark than she had to her parents. What made her able to open up to him when just thinking of Brad or Alan usually brought her to her knees, she didn’t know. She also didn’t know why she’d spent a good deal of the night staring at the ceiling thinking of Ian despite how tired she was.

Ian had worked at the Center for most of the day. His parents had come by to pick up the kids so they could have some alone time with them and give her and Ian a break. But in those moments after the kids had left, the house felt too quiet, leaving Abby unsettled. She was relieved when she heard Ian push the door open and come into the house. But she didn’t stop her task of picking up the disaster the boys had left before Ian’s parents had arrived.

Ian stood in the doorway leading to the living room. She glanced up at him and saw he was still wearing his jacket.

“You’re not staying?” she asked.

“I want you to tell me what I did wrong.”

Abby bent down and picked up the balled up socks that Jacob and Jonathan had discarded earlier in the day.

“You didn’t do anything wrong.”

“You’re pushing me away.”

She stood up straight and faced him. “I’m cleaning.”

“You’re avoiding.”

“You’re annoying.”

He chuckled. “I think my sister would agree with you.”

Despite her wanting to, Abby chuckled, too. “You never let up. I really don’t know how she’s put up with all of you for so long.”

“She has the same DNA. She just doesn’t like to admit it.” He looked around and then clapped his hands together.

“What makes you think I’m avoiding you?”

“You didn’t talk at all during breakfast. You usually bring the kids down to the Center at least once during the day. Here it is at the end of the day and it’s the first time I’ve seen you since this morning.”

“I was busy,” she said with a shrug.

“That’s an excuse. We had a good time together last night.”

She couldn’t deny it. “I enjoyed our talk.”

“So, what would you like to do?”

“Do?”

“Yeah? Everything seems to be running smooth over at the Center. Regis and Poppy have been going gangbusters to get all the details ready for the wedding. So I find myself with a night off and time on my hands for the first time in a long time.”

“So go play?”

His lips tilted to a devilish grin. “Yeah? You want to play?”

“Me?” She laughed. “There’s a mountain of laundry here to do.”

“All of which can be done while the kids are napping tomorrow.”

“So what do you do around here that qualifies as play?”

“Well, dancing is out,” he said, tapping his leg with his hand.
