If you ask me, all the things you need for Christmas are just as exciting all the other months of the year, so it would be a much better idea if the Christmas box stayed in my bedroom all year round.

But my mum always says no.

“What do you want out of the Christmas box?” she asked, not shouting any more because she was at the bottom of the stairs.

“I need a cracker for my Halloween costume,” I said. “Can you see if there are any crackers left over from Christmas, please?”

The trouble with crackers left over from Christmas is they are exactly the sort of thing children should be allowed to pull all the other months of the year. But my mum always says no to that too.
