Chapter Twelve: The Mockingbird

I couldn’t believe this was real. Dagger was moving in with me! TODAY. Yes, I went for it. I asked him to live at my house. Well, I told him actually. I also had to get used to the idea that he loved me. Wanted me to be his. For all these years, I’d believed differently.

We both began taking boxes to the car, filling Peggy Sue’s backseat. We then used the trunk ‒ which was roomy as it was a Cadillac ‒ to put all his clothes in. Finally, we stood at the empty unit door.

I looked over at Dagger. “Close it and when you do, pretend all of that bitterness and rage is in there. Then shut the door and leave it here.”

He stared at me. “Is that like some kind of therapy trick?”

I smiled. “Maybe but just do it.”

He gave me a wink. “Already getting bossy, I see.”

I laughed. “I always have been and you are just now noticing?”

With a low chuckle, he nodded. “You got me there.” Turning to look at the now empty unit that had held all his treasures he had believed were lost, he closed his eyes.

I stood quietly while feeling proud of him. He was trying and that was a good start.

Releasing a huge breath, he stepped forward and pulled the rolling door down.

When the bottom of it hit the cement, I almost jumped. He’d slammed it down pretty hard. I glanced over at him and raised an eyebrow. “Lots of rage left, I see.”

Shaking his head, he replied, “It may take a few mac trucks to ship it all out.” He turned to me and held his palm out.

Giggling, I dropped Peggy Sue’s key into his hand. He wanted to drive and I couldn’t blame him. I wanted him to enjoy every minute of this.

We turned and stepped over to the car.

I went around the hood and halted at the door.

Dagger grinned at me over the top of the car. “Good girl.” He came around and opened the door for me. Pausing as he stepped close to me, he leaned in to kiss my neck.

My knees went weak as his hot breath grazed my ear. When we did get together, I was going to be a mess. I hadn’t been touched since prom night. I would be like a puddle on the floor when we finally—

“You okay there, Caro?” he asked with a small chuckle when I didn’t immediately get into the passenger seat.

Catching myself, I nodded. “Yes, yes.” I slid in and he closed the door. In my head, I was chanting, no, no. I am not okay. This had been a dream for me for so long that I wasn’t sure even now if it was real.

Getting in, he shut the door and started the caddy up. We rolled out of the storage lot area and headed out to the main road. I tried not to stare at him. I really tried, but all I wanted to do was look at him.
