Evan & Lila

Evan

A few weeks had passed by with several more run-ins with Lila and Candiss, but I noticed that Lila seemed to be more distant lately and was worried that this scheme was beginning to take its toll on her. Candiss seemed to have stopped trying to take me for lunch but still called me every day asking if I’d go out with her. Today was no different, only she was trying a different angle.

“Evan, love. I’m in a bit of a bind. It seems my faucets aren’t working in the place I’m renting. I’d call the landlord, but he’s away for two weeks on vacation. Would you please come and help me?”

I knew this for what it was: a tactic to get me into her bedroom, so she could tell Lila later that I was there, and it wouldn’t be a lie. I wasn’t falling for it. How dumb does she think I am?

“Take down this number,” I told her, “555-689-9889.”

“Whose number is that?” Candiss asked me.

“It’s the number of the plumber I call when I have plumbing problems. He’s really good. I think you’ll get along great with him.”

She hung up on me. I breathed a sigh of relief.

About two hours later, I happened to be on my computer and heard a throaty growl and knowing it to be the sound of an Audi R8, I went to my camera app on my computer, so I could see who had just driven up to the office. I was hoping it was a potential client, but I saw it was Candiss and sighed. Here we go again.

I decided to watch her walk from her car up to the building, thinking it was odd that she didn’t have her driver drop her off like usual. I guess she gave that up since I kept turning her down. As she approached the front door, I saw a few Girl Scouts with boxes of cookies also coming to the front door. That’s when I saw it. The Girl Scouts walked up to Candiss, obviously asking if she’d buy some cookies. Candiss looked at the cookie entrepreneurs and ran toward them, screaming at them to go away. I stood up and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I felt so bad for the young girls as anger set in.

I heard her approach my office, and she stopped but didn’t come in. “Hi, Evan. I accidentally lost that number you gave me, so I’ll need you to stop by tonight to fix my faucet.”

“Sorry, no can do. I’ve got plans tonight,” I told her, sunshine dancing in my heart.

“Are you sure you want to be like that?” she asked me.

I thought that was a very odd question. “I’m not being like anything. You can’t just come here and start demanding things of me and expect me to jump. I’ve got plans tonight,” I said more firmly.

“Okay. Just remember that when everything crumbles to your feet, it’ll be your own fault.”

“Before you go, I have a question for you.
