Chapter 27

Main Entrance

Valley Village Retirement Community

Santa Fe, New Mexico

The deafening sound from the crowd echoed across the neighborhood. Dana questioned just how many people were trying to get into the retirement community. From the sound of it, she expected to see thousands.

One of the few steps the residents had taken to mitigate the unchecked flow of strangers into their community was to roll cars damaged during the sandstorm — and the ones wrecked during the various gunfights that ensued — to the front of the community. With the guard shack wrecked and burned to the ground, there was no stopping anyone who chose to walk through the open gate. However, after they parked a couple cars nose to nose two layers deep, the residents found it provided enough of a barrier for those clamoring to get in that they could actually control the flow of pedestrians.

It helped that the six men from a militia team guarding the entrance were all heavily armed.

Dana found Nieve Sanchez, the teacher turned liaison for the refugees, in front of the vehicle barrier, flanked by two men with rifles in mismatched tactical gear. Arrayed in a semicircle around the vehicles was a dense crowd at least ten people deep. Dana paused and took in the spectacle of hands waving in the air, fists clenched in protest, the shouting, the crying, children huddled near their parents’ legs, and the sea of bedraggled faces as people sought safety on the road from Santa Fe.

Dana frowned. The scene belonged out of a migrant crisis in some Eastern European country, not the middle of New Mexico.

As Dana hurried to get around the barrier and join Nieve, it dawned on her that the refugees were not restricted to one class of citizens — they were from all walks of life — some were dressed better than others, some had more personal items than others, some appeared to have just rolled out of bed, while others looked like they'd slept in the streets for the last year.

It was an eclectic cross-section of American society. One thing she could tell right off the bat — which set the hairs on the back of her neck tingling — was that the people at the front of the crowd, pressing forward and threatening to climb over the cars into the perceived safety of the community, were all men.

Several of them were also armed.

Dana clenched her jaw as she clambered over the last vehicle and rushed up next to Nieve. She tapped the woman on the shoulder. The former teacher about jumped out of her skin.

Dana held up her hands. “Hey, it's okay — it's just me.”

The look of fear and surprise on Nieve’s face relaxed as she recognized Dana. “Oh, thank goodness,” she gasped. Dana had to lean in close to hear her over the constant shouting and yelling from the people in the street.

“Let us in!”

“You've got to do something! Those people are shooting everyone in Santa Fe!”

“They followed us here!”

“We can't go
