The first half of the 16th century was the peak of prosperity for medieval Burgos, with its population reaching 25,000. However, with reduction in the pilgrimage, the city went into a prolonged period of economic decline and the population fell to 4500 by 1600. This depression continued until the railway arrived in 1860 bringing industrialisation. During the Civil War, Burgos was a nationalist stronghold and General Franco’s headquarters from 1936–39. Post-war growth has been strong, particularly since 1970, and the city now has a broad industrial and commercial sector with many new buildings and wide boulevards. With 60km of dedicated cycle tracks, Burgos has the best provision in Spain in terms of kilometres per head and the second highest cycle use as a percentage of all journeys.
