Joy Returns

Trying to survive the death of a young child is something many families are forced to deal with, and the results are often devastating. In Neil and Kimberly’s case, Brooke’s death brought them new meaning. They lived more for the moment, for each other and their families rather than mostly for themselves. Through all the grief and unimaginable pain and trying to make sense of the disorder that Brooke’s death brought to their sense of all that was right and wrong in the world, they came together.

And that’s the way it went for them: When they encountered marital problems, they received counseling and returned to their strong beliefs and support system. When they decided to start Neil’s new business, they relied on each other to fill the gaps created at home. After they lost Brooke, they grieved together, turned to each other, and continued to go to counseling together. When the world was thrown into chaos in the wake of 9/11, they coordinated their lives so Kimberly could volunteer more and Neil could double his efforts at work so his business would stay afloat. When Kimberly’s father died of cancer soon after they lost Brooke, they helped each other deal with the pain of another death. When Kimberly got the news that she was pregnant at forty-one, they came together even more and planned with optimism for a new chapter in their lives. Through all the peaks and valleys, closer together was always their end goal.

The emotions were palpable as Kimberly and Neil watched the doctor perform an ultrasound. “Imagine if it’s a girl,” Kimberly said. “Do you think the boys—can Jake—be okay with her?”

“He can. Together, we can do whatever we need,” Neil said.

“Well,” the doctor said, “isn’t that interesting.”

“Interesting?” Neil asked.

“It’s not a girl, I’m afraid, but it’s not exactly a boy either.” There was a short pause as the doctor moved the wand around Kimberly’s belly. “Yup, you see here: It’s two boys. Twins.”

She put the ultrasound wand back in the holster and pressed a button next to the screen. An image printed on thermal paper. The doctor showed the image to Neil and Kimberly.

“You see, here’s baby one, and right there, that’s two.”
