Chapter 13

Hazel

“Slide! You need to slide!” I screamed from the dugout.

G rey was trying to steal second base as soon as the pitch was released. He’s one of our fastest base runners and has some of the best stats in the league for it. He usually always beats the ball to the bag, but this catcher has a really good arm on him.

As soon as he saw Grey stealing, he popped up and threw the equivalent of a speeding bullet to second base. Which leads me to now and why I’m screaming.

Grey is about four feet away from the bag, and the second baseman was just about to catch the ball and tag him out.

He goes for the slide and right before his hand hits the bag, like we're talking a millisecond here, He’s tagged out.

Crap!

“Damn it!” Aries slams his hand down on the gate. We’re now in the bottom of the 8th inning and we’re down by three runs.

If we can’t pull this win off somehow, then we’re going to be tied with the Indiana Eagles 2 - 2. Which means we’re going to have to play three more games at the most to see who wins the World Series.

Tonight, Asher isn’t pitching, so he’s been cheering them on with me from the dugout.

“You know that Gaston is the reason we’re losing right now, right? I would be doing so much better than him if I was out there.”

He’s also been making grumbles about Turner, or Gaston as he and Wilder like to call him, which never fails to make me laugh, since we put him in to relieve Chris in the 3rd inning.

“Babe, baseball is a team sport. Plus, even if we wanted to, we couldn’t put you in right now. You pitched the first game we played against them three days ago. You have to have at least four days of resting your arm before we can put you back out there.”

“I know, I know. I just hate not being able to help them. We’re so close to winning this whole thing. I don’t want to make it this close, to lose it all here at the end.”

“No one likes losing, but someone always has to. I have confidence in our team though. Besides, even if we lose this one, we still have plenty more tries to get ahead and win the whole series.”

He raised a black eyebrow up at me with his blue eyes looking at me skeptically. “You really think so?”

I mean I’m not 100 percent positive about that, but I refuse to tell him that.

I think our team is amazing, but no one knows what the future holds for us. Do I think we have a fairly good chance though? Yes.

So instead, I answer with a confident, “Absolutely.”
